Glasgow south side community pub to reopen after huge £350k revamp

A Glasgow pub is set to reopen later this month after being given a major revamp.

The Brockburn, formerly called The Pollok Inn, on Brockburn Road in the south side will reopen its doors on Friday, February 23 after receiving an investment of £340,000. The pub is part of Proper Pubs, a community-led division of Admiral Taverns, which has more than 200 pubs across England, Scotland and Wales.

Behind the bar is, Margaret Drennan who has worked at the pub for the last 40 years and has been the operator for nearly 23 years. Magaret’s family has a long-standing association with the pub, so she is keen to cement it at the heart of the local area.

Inside, the pub will be transformed with an updated bar and lounge area, while the pub’s exterior will be given a new modern look, including new lighting and signage.

For opening night on Friday, the pub will be celebrating with live music starting at 8pm. On Saturday, festivities will continue with a performance from local band Dizzy Corner.

Margaret Drennan, operator of the Brockburn is excited about the reopening and said: “The pub is already looking amazing, and I can’t believe the transformation so far. I can’t wait to get back behind the bar as the operator, show off the pub’s new look and welcome new and old customers in. We will continue to support the community in any way we can, and we’ll be starting off by collecting food for a local food bank, and donations to get a defibrillator installed.

Pubs are the hub of their community, and we can’t wait to be the hub of ours. I want to give a special thanks to Caroline and the rest of my team for being there for me over the years and who have helped to make the pub a success.”

The Brockburn will run a schedule of regular entertainment such as weekly karaoke and quiz nights as well as hosting darts and pool teams.

Matthew Gurney, Operations Director for Proper Pubs, said: “I’m really excited about the opening of the Brockburn! The team is working extremely hard on this refurbishment and it’s looking incredible already. We’re just finalising those finishing touches to ensure its ready to open in just a few weeks’ time.

On behalf of the Proper Pubs team, we would like to wish Margaret, every inch of success for the future in making the Brockburn a fantastic hub of the community.”
