Liverpool are set to face off against city rivals Everton on Wednesday night in the Merseyside derby – and things are already getting spicy.
Star Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara has delivered the ultimate derby put-down, although it seems like he did so completely unintentionally.
It comes as the Spain midfielder has been linked with a January transfer move away from Anfield.
Thiago has reportedly been the subject of interest from new Barcelona manager Xavi with the player linked with a move back to his first club.
The links come as no real surprise with the player having been in fine form in recent weeks and is one of four Reds players named in the latest Premier League Team of the Week following Liverpool’s impressive 4-0 win over Southampton at the weekend.
Here are Mirror Football’s latest Liverpool headlines.

Liverpool quartet in team of the week
Four Liverpool players have been named in the latest Premier League Team of the Week.
Jurgen Klopp’s men secured a 4-0 win over Southampton on Saturday with goals apiece from Thiago Alcantara, Virgil Van Dijk as well as two from Diego Jota to keep the pressure up on league leaders Chelsea.
And four players have now been rewarded for their fine displays during the game as the Reds secured the most players from a single team in this week’s line-up.
Thiago must prove himself to leave legacy
Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has been on quite the run in recent weeks.
He netted one of the goals of the season so far with his ‘thunderball’ effort against Porto in the Champions League, and found himself on the scoresheet again against Southampton with another effort from the edge of the box.
The Spain international’s time at Anfield so far has been blighted by injury and he’s struggled to get a lengthy run of games to demonstrate his best form.
It is now time for him to do just that to leave a legacy at the club after he quashed rumours linking him with a return to Barcelona.
Alcantara’s Everton put-down
Everyone knows there’s no love lost between Liverpool and Everton, and Thiago may have just delivered the ultimate derby put down.
The clubs face off in their first Premier League clash since former boss Rafa Benitez took the reigns at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.
But speaking about the derby ahead of the big game, Thiago’s description of the match may have a few Everton fans rattled.Internet Explorer Channel Network
