'They never gave up': Brent Denechezhe's mother thanks RCMP, community for support
The RCMP came to my house and told me what they discovered. I want to thank the investigators. They never gave up. And so I’m so thankful for that. They truly cared, and I felt that from the very beginning. Brent was a gentle person who always had a smile. Everyone liked him. He played hockey when he was younger and he loved the Winnipeg Jets. It was his dream to make it to a live game, a dream he won’t see happen. I am most proud of the father Brent was. He loved his girls and was always doing things with them. He was so proud of them. I miss him. I’m not the greatest cook, but he loved to eat my homemade pizza and spaghetti. I miss him sitting at the table with me and eating as much of it as he could. I miss our shared love of 80s music. He loved all types of music. He was truly a good person altogether. I don’t know what to feel about all this right now. I’m relieved that we know who hurt Brent and Leona. I’m relieved that the police arrested him. But I know he has a family. I think everyone has lost here. Our community has been so supportive. I am more thankful than I can see. I don’t know what I would do without my community. Now I try to move forward. I try to walk into the future knowing Brent is not part of that. I try to be strong for my for his children. While I miss my child, I will continue to rely on my community and my family. Leona’s mother, Ellen, also helps me stay strong. We are in this together. I miss you, Brent, and I love you always.
