Guwahati: In what could be termed as a “big blow” and a major setback for the Congress ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the General Secretary (GS), Administration, and the Chief Spokesperson of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee, resigned from the grand old party on Saturday.
The senior Congress leader deciding to leave the party came just a day ahead of the commencement of the Rahul Gandhi-led ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ which was flagged off from the northeast state of Manipur on Sunday.
It is yet another major setback for the party in 48 hours after it suffered a humiliating defeat in the recently concluded North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) elections where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious bagging 25 seats in the 30-member autonomous body in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. The Indian National Congress (INC) could not even manage to win a single seat in the polls.
Speaking exclusively to ABP Live, Bhattacharjee said that he decided to leave the party as it had no vision and the workers who work hard for the party get no recognition.
“I resigned from the Congress as I felt that there is no “proper vision” of the party and it is a “divided house.” Moreover, there is no recognition for the grass root and hard working members in the party. The party also lacks in making “key policies” to raise the voice of the common peoples. There is not even “united effort” for the party to grow,” Bhattacharjee told ABP Live.
Bhattacharjee further said that the Congress party is very less serious in every aspect, whether it may be the elections or in policy making.
Bhattacharjee joined the Congress in 2013 after parting ways with the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). Prior to this, he was the Vice President of the AGP from 2004 until the date of leaving the party. Before joining active politics, Bhattacharjee was a two-term President and two-term GS of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), a student and youth organisation of Assam. He unsuccessfully contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Assam’s Mangaldoi constituency on an AGP ticket. He again unsuccessfully contested the 2011 Assam assembly elections from the state’s Dhekiajuli constituency on an AGP ticket.
Bhattacharjee is likely to return to the AGP very soon which is an ally of the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam.
