President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today, on April 22, had a conversation with his American counterpart Joe Biden. They discussed the weapons supplies needed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian president’s Telegram page.

Biden assured Zelenskyy that he would immediately sign the bill providing assistance to Ukraine upon its approval by the US Senate. Zelenskyy thanked Biden for the unwavering support of Ukraine and for his current global leadership.

“I also noted the bipartisan support for the bill and the personal roles of Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Another decision of the House of Representatives to allow the confiscation of Russian assets sends a powerful signal to all our partners,” Zelenskyy writes.

New aid package for Ukraine

Zelenskyy briefed Biden on the Russian air terror with thousands of rockets, drones, and bombs. In particular, he mentioned the strike on the TV tower in Kharkiv, which occurred literally minutes before their conversation. The Ukrainian President is convinced that this is a clear intention of Russia to make the city uninhabitable.

The presidents discussed the first package of defense assistance that the US will provide to Ukraine after the law is passed. Biden assured that it will be swift and robust, strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, long-range capabilities, and artillery.

They also discussed the signing of a bilateral security agreement and preparations for the upcoming Peace Summit.

What was said in the White House

The White House statement indicates that President Biden has announced that his administration will swiftly provide significant new security assistance packages to meet Ukraine’s urgent needs, including air defense.

Biden also emphasized that US economic assistance will help maintain financial stability, restore critical infrastructure after Russian attacks, and support reforms as Ukraine progresses on the path to Euro-Atlantic integration.

US assistance

Since last fall, the US has been unable to approve aid to Ukraine due to the stance of certain members of the Republican Party in the lower house of Congress.

However, recently the US House of Representatives approved a bill to provide aid to Ukraine, and it will be voted on in the Senate tomorrow. After that, the bill must be signed by President Biden.

The New York Times reported that the first batch of US military aid could be delivered to Ukraine within a few days after the bill is signed by the US president.
