The Verdict runs in competition at the Palm Springs festival

The Dutch feature film The Condemnation has been selected for the competition of the prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival. That is what distributor September Film reported today. The drama about the Deventer murder case will run in competition at the festival at the beginning of January.

The selection for Palm Springs has special significance for actor Yorick van Wageningen, who won a Golden Calf for his role in the film. “My career in the United States took off when my new agent at the time summoned all kinds of people from the film industry to see the film Total Loss at the Palm Springs festival,” he says. ,,Which The Condemnation will be running there now, which is why I think it is extra special.”

The Condemnation was named the best Dutch cinema film of the year at the Netherlands Film Festival. The drama reconstructs the Deventer murder case based on the book by journalist Bas Haan, played by Fedja van Huêt.

murder case

The case revolved around the murder of the widow Wittenberg in 1999. The court convicted ‘bookkeeper’ Ernest Louwes for the murder, he was imprisoned for more than eight years. During the hearing of the case, pollster Maurice de Hond argued, without substantial evidence, that ‘the handyman’ of the widow would have committed the murder. This image lingered for years, both among the public and journalists.

The film is still in cinemas and will be available on DVD from January 12th and can be seen via streaming services.
