It’s important to differentiate between being on a diet and choosing foods that benefit our overall health. This is especially true as we age and become more concerned about our cognitive function than just our waistlines. While we may know the foods we should avoid, deciding which ones to eat can be a challenging task.
This can make it hard to snack without worrying about any unintended consequences. However, Costco has many great options if you know where to find them.
Take a look at this video from April 2 to discover what a neuroscientist who specializes in brain health selects when he visits this store.
Dr. Robert Love, an expert in brain health, is guiding us toward some excellent choices for our next Costco trip. These snacks nourish our brains and benefit our wallets and waistlines, helping us steer clear of overpriced and unhealthy items when we are out.
Brain Healthy Snacks at Costco
First up is a large container of delectable dates. As these can sometimes taste sweeter than candy and spike our blood sugar, he suggests eating them with walnuts to balance the glycemic load out. Not to mention, they go so perfectly together! He’s also picking up an enormous pack of sardines. He reports these are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help to keep our brains healthy. Pumpkin seeds, he reveals, are another excellent choice as they are rich in magnesium and give us the salt we crave. He’s also picking up a bag of hemp seeds because they are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which he enjoys adding to salads or smoothies. He also advises us to grab organic frozen blueberries and organic broccoli if we want to start our day with these drinks.
However, he tells us his favorite snack is mushroom chips. He reports that mushrooms, when eaten three times a week or more, significantly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Wow! That’s good to know. He cautions this bag of chips will not reduce our risk of developing Alzheimer’s. However, when we incorporate mushrooms into our diet regularly, they show great promise.
Nonetheless, he feels these chips are a great alternative to potato chips and can be a gateway health food. He advises us to buy a jar of almond butter to blend with real maple syrup if we crave something sweet. He also suggests picking up a few jars of artichoke hearts, as they are easy to travel with and good for the gut.
I never need a reason to go to Costco, but he has given me several. These choices will not only help to keep us satisfied, but they may also help keep our brains functioning at their best.
