The Jon Dahl Tomasson era at Ewood Park suddenly feels a whole lot closer to beginning as Blackburn Rovers now know their fixture schedule for next season.
Rovers will kick-off their campaign at home to Queens Park Rangers and you feel that a positive start is absolutely crucial for Tomasson. There hasn’t been huge pressure to deliver results immediately placed on his shoulders, with Director of Football Gregg Broughton keen to stress the journey Rovers are to embark on.
But, for the sake of Tomasson’s rapport with the fans, the feeling around Blackburn as a club and the mood among a new-look Rovers squad, some early wins will do the world of good for the Dane. A first five of QPR and West Brom at home and Swansea, Reading and Sheffield United away, is not the most daunting start in the world. Rovers, who will naturally strengthen in the transfer window in the coming weeks, are capable of taking points over those 450 minutes.
Another key cluster of matches looks to be in November and December. There are only three games in November before the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar comes into force. Rovers have Coventry away, Huddersfield at home and then Burnley away for the first East Lancashire derby of the season. What a win over the Clarets, before the major tournament, would do for Tomasson and his players…
Heading into that long break in a healthy place would serve as a massive boost for Blackburn. Not to mention, that when they return to action after the World Cup, they host Preston North End prior to a tricky trio of festive fixtures away to Norwich City and Sunderland, then at home to Middlesbrough. All 24 teams play each other twice, of course, but you always look back in May and can pinpoint those moments where games were won and lost; seasons ignited and crushed.
