The top ten holiday locations Aussies are searching for post-lockdown

As states look to open their borders once the 80 per cent vaccination target is reached Australia-wide hopeful residents are gearing up to book their next interstate holiday.

In a bid to decipher exactly where Aussies are planning on roaming to, Booking.com has released its Back to Travel report to prove that Queensland and Western Australia reign supreme when it comes to states we’re wanting to travel to.

The company’s data shows that by the end of the year Aussies would prefer to be sunning themselves in either the Gold Coast or Perth when the nation reaches its 80 per cent vaccine threshold.

These two locations are followed closely behind by Brisbane, Adelaide, Cairns, Noosa Heads and Darwin.

To round out the list of domestic escapes, Airlie Beach, Hervey Bay and Mooloolaba ranked in the top 10 most searched for destinations over the past month.

Australians are placing more importance than ever before on taking some much-needed time out with 61 per cent of travellers agreeing that the importance of holidays have increased.

Meanwhile 67 per cent of those surveyed were willing to accept that they could only travel with proof of vaccination and 69 per cent were happy to wear a mask during their getaway.

While some are looking to travel to domestic locations others are dreaming off far-off plans overseas, which may not be as far away as you think.

The most searched global regions are again topped by Queensland and Western Australia, followed by NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT.

To finish the list, Greater London and in typical Aussie fashion, Bali, are the most searched international destinations for those optimistic enough to consider overseas travel.

Booking.com Area Manager for Australia Melissa Ellison said Australians are becoming more optimistic that sooner rather than later they might be able to enjoy some post-lockdown relaxation.

‘Our data shows our exploratory appetite and desire to get back to travel as soon as possible remains strong and we’re expecting a very busy travel period over Christmas and NYE,’ Ms Ellison said.

‘It’s reassuring to see that after a year of unpredictable events, from outbreaks to earthquakes, Aussies have high hopes to return to not just domestic but international travel soon too.’

According to covidlive.com.au data 76.7 per cent of Australians over the age of 16 have had their first dose of a vaccine and 52.6 per cent have received two jabs.

Being the most sought after travel destination Australians are sweating on the reopening of Queensland’s borders.

The Queensland deputy premier on Monday hinted the state’s borders could be opened before Christmas.

‘No-one has ever suggested that the border should be closed at Christmas, but what we have said is that it should be opened at the right time and we don’t yet have the information that tells us what that right time is,’ Steven Miles told reporters in Townsville.

‘Let’s focus on what we can do today and tomorrow and next week and that is the best way to make sure that we are open by Christmas, maybe even before Christmas.’

The prime minister on Sunday demanded state leaders meet their commitments under the national cabinet plan to reopen borders when vaccination rates hit 80 per cent, allowing families to reunite at Christmas.

Mr Miles hit back hours later where he accused Mr Morrison of giving people false hope before backpedalling on his comments on Monday morning, where he conceded ‘a lot can change’ in 90 days.

‘The point I was trying to make is that’s it’s 90 days away. The only information and modelling we have at the moment pre-dates the Sydney outbreak,’ Mr Miles said.

‘Sydney has been in lockdown for 13, approaching 14 weeks and the modelling we currently have is before that outbreak.

‘Christmas is still 90 days away. A lot can change in that period of time.’

Western Australia, the second most popular travel destination, has similarly taken a hardball stance to border re-openings.

Premier Mark McGowan admitted on September 22 his plans were due to locals slow vaccination rates, but insisted that NSW and Victoria will not be allowed to enter the state until at least two months after it hits 85-90 per cent.

‘I’m not going to set an artificial deadline of Christmas,’ the premier told Sunrise.

‘We have plans in place but I’m not going to deliberately allow for Covid to come in before such time as we have very high levels [of vaccination].

‘I know some people over in the eastern states are demanding we do it, I don’t really get that, I don’t understand why we would deliberately infect ourselves with Covid before we get to very high levels of vaccine.’
