Intensifying Battle In Avdiivka Prompts Mandatory Civilian Evacuation
The Ukrainian town of Avdiivka is currently facing “meat assaults” by relentless Russian troops and artillery as it remains surrounded on three sides.
Avdiivka has become a key battlefield in the war with Russia and although it remains in Ukrainian hands, it is in danger of being taken by Russia.
The Ukrainian town has been pounded by Russian attacks over recent weeks, with casualties heavy on both sides, but particularly among the Russian attackers.
One Ukrainian sniper codenamed “Bess” told CNN of the “meat assualts” on Avdiivka, and said: “The dead soldiers just lie there frozen. It feels like people don’t have a specific task, they just go and die.”
“Teren,” commander of a Ukrainian drone reconnaissance unit, also told the outlet: “If we can kill 40 to 70 servicemen with drones in a day, the next day they renew their forces and continue to attack.

“In 18 months of fighting around the town, we have killed at least 1,500 Russians. Still, they keep coming.”
Ukrainian troops are struggling to keep control of the town due to a heavy reliance on international aid which cannot always fulfill the high demand required to fight off these assaults.
One Ukrainian special forces officer, “Sayer,” emphasised the critical nature of the battle: “We are doing everything possible and impossible to hold this line. I don’t know what will happen next, but Avdiivka is holding on. We are on our land. We have nothing to lose.”
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, during a surprise visit in late December, described the battle for Avdiivka as an “onslaught,” adding that it could “determine the overall course of the war.”
The lives of Ukrainian soldiers fighting in Avdiivka heavily depend on the availability of weapons and arms, particularly those being given as aid from the US.

“The assistance that we provided has now ground to a halt. The attacks that the Russians are conducting are only increasing,” warned US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding future aid packages.
However, the US recently depolyed Bradley Fighting Vehicles to the region, which have quickly become essential in fighting back against Russian attacks.
A crew commander also told the outlet from behind the Avidiivake frontline: “I doubt that we would be here talking with you. The vehicle is a tough one. It’s not afraid of anything.”
The gruelling winter conditions in Avdiivka also put a strain on Ukrainian troops, compounding the issue of limited resources, but troops remain determined to keep it from enetering Russian control.
