Luke McCaffrey 40 time: Christian McCaffrey’s brother narrowly bests 49ers star’s mark at NFL Combine

It’s no secret that the McCaffrey family is an athletic bunch.

Christian McCaffrey is arguably the best running back in the NFL right now. His father, Ed, was a standout wide receiver in the league for 13 years. His mother, Lisa, starred at Stanford as a soccer player. Four of the boys, including Christian, have played college football.

While the 49ers star running back may be racking up more accolades than his siblings, he has officially lost out on bragging rights when it comes to speed.

Christian’s younger brother, Luke, a wide receiver out of Rice University, is in the draft process. He impressed at the Scouting Combine this weekend, all while giving credit to his family ahead of his performance.

“[My family] has shaped me in every possible way,” “They are the biggest blessing I ever had that I never earned. I didn’t do anything to earn having those role models in my life. I was just blessed with it. I was blessed to have my heroes as my three brothers, my mom and my dad.”

While he may have been giving praise to his brothers before the combine, there is one mark from the event that undoubtedly is getting sent around the family group chat. That would be the time that Luke earned in the 40-yard dash — and which brother he beat out in the event.

The Rice wide receiver put up a respectable 40 time of 4.47 seconds.

It was not close to being at the top of the leaderboard, as Texas’ Xavier Worthy set a record in the 40-yard dash with his blazing mark of 4.21. In addition, McCaffrey trailed a number of other high-end wide receiver talents in the class, such as Michigan’s Roman Wilson, Texas’ Adonai Mitchell, UNC’s Tez Walker, and Georgia’s Ladd McConkey.

Luke did beat out his brother Christian — barely. Luke’s time of 4.47 narrowly edged his older brother’s mark of 4.48 he ran in 2017.

The 49ers running back is no slow poke. Part of what makes Christian so dynamic is his breakaway speed in the open field.

The former Stanford star finished toward the top of the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine among running backs with his time of 4.48. He finished tied for the fourth-fastest mark with San Diego State’s Donnel Pumphrey and Coastal Carolina’s De’Angelo Henderson.

UNC’s T.J. Logan had far and away the fastest time of the 2017 running backs, setting a stellar mark of 4.37 seconds.

Luke McCaffrey weighed in at 194 pounds and was measured at 6-2 at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.
