Granted, Sharon Stone is not your ‘everywoman’ kind of celebrity. But there is something for all of us to take away from her post-lockdown attitude to fashion; a more is more approach that has seen her glam it up morning, noon and night for the last month.
Stone started this week in Dubai, before moving on to Seville. Her brilliantly wobbly video diaries (posted on Instagram) have shown her taking a dune safari ride in a silk maxi dress, and attending a Giorgio Armani fashion show wearing a sequin and velvet gown emblazoned with the designer’s face. All this, and it’s only Thursday…
Prior to this, Stone’s last few weeks of travelling have taken her from Cannes to New York, Venice to Zurich, and to Monte Carlo. On every stop of her touring holiday she has adopted unapologetic princess dresses and glittery gala gowns – a body-skimming silver chainmail gown and an enormous 5.64 carat Colombian emerald ring to accompany Prince Albert of Monaco to a film screening, or a gold sequin bustier gown for a film festival appearance in Zurich. Even her most recent suiting look was dusted with bling – a silver thread in the Prince of Wales check fabric, and some huge earrings to set it off.
She is, presumably, being paid for her various appearances. But unlike the many celebrities who grouchily navigate their promotional duties, smiling Stone is, clearly, having the time of her life – and has the joyous wardrobe to match for the occasion.
From Armani, to Dolce & Gabbana, suddenly Stone, 63, is the woman designers are falling over themselves to dress, and in their most frothy, frivolous designs. It’s a marked change from before the pandemic, when Stone spent much of her time at home in Los Angeles, and when she did attend red carpet events tended to wear a lot more sleek black and grey tailoring, saving the glitzy dresses for only the truly big occasions.
Stone, who found global fame in 1992 for her role in Basic Instinct, spoke recently of how, since turning 60, she has found a new sense of enjoyment in her career and her ‘place’ in Hollywood.
“We really have to start dealing with the fact that it’s cool to be a grown-up and intelligent woman,” she told The Telegraph.
She also spoke about the ‘damaged goods’ stigma she has fought to shake off in the entertainment industry, after suffering from a stroke and nine-day brain bleed in 2001. She described how she had been put to “the back of the line”. In March she released a memoir about her reinvention, The Beauty of Living Twice.
“It was like I’d been this very bright and shiny thing, and then I got a ding in my fender and suddenly I just wasn’t bright and shiny any more.”
Since the international lockdowns were lifted she has recalibrated and decided to ‘just go for it’, sartorially speaking, whenever she gets the chance. Being invited by Vogue editor Anna Wintour to attend September’s Met Gala in New York for the first time was a highlight (Stone documented the hilarity of having her makeup fixed en route in the back of a minibus) as was her dominance at the Cannes Film Festival party scene back in July, where she was spotted swilling champagne and posing with an Afghan Hound whose hair was as white-blonde and glossy as hers.
Working with her longtime stylist Paris Libby, she has been breaking all of the outdated ‘rules’ about what a woman in her 60s may have once been expected to wear – from lingerie tops and side split skirts, to tulle confections of Disney-like proportions. She has veered away from the signature styles we all previously associated her with, in favour of pure fashion fun.
It is all rather reminiscent of when the fashion industry became re-enamoured with Celine Dion in 2017. When turning 50 and recovering from grief after losing her husband, Dion decided a makeover was on the cards and was spotted wearing outre looks by brands from Dior to Chanel.
Stone can’t be dressing with the hope that others will directly copy her couture frocks (in the way that they might once have been inspired to buy the androdgynous tailored jackets off her back) but perhaps a lucrative fashion-brand ambassadorship is already on the cards.
However, for the rest of us, there may at least be some light-hearted inspiration and entertainment to be taken from the endeavour.
