The seven multipurpose surface cleaners so good they all came first in a CHOICE review
Shoppers searching the aisles for an effective multipurpose surface cleaner are spoilt for choice, according to a new study.
Consumer advocate CHOICE has revealed the results of its surface cleaner review for 2024, with a whopping 11 products earning its expert recommendation.
The top performer of the 55 tested is not just one or two cleaners tying for first place, but seven different products.

“If you want a surface cleaner that really works, our testing shows that you need to choose wisely,” Matthew Steen, CHOICE head of reviews and testing, said.
“An impressive seven products tied for first place in our review with scores of 95 per cent. These include both specific kitchen cleaners and general multipurpose cleaners from well-known brands such as Ajax, Dettol, Jif, Nifti and Pine O Cleen.”
The seven top performing surface cleaners are:
- Ajax professional Kitchen
- Dettol Healthy Clean Kitchen
- Earth Choice Antibacterial All Purpose
- Earth Choice Undo This Mess with Grease Blaster Multipurpose
- Easy Off Bam Kitchen Specialist Universal Degreaser
- Jiff Cleanboost Kitchen
- Nifti All Purpose Cleaner
Those on a budget looking for the best value spray in the top seven should check out Jiff Cleanboost Kitchen, which was $3.50 at the time of testing, and Earth Choice Antibacterial All Purpose, which was $4 at the time of testing.
“Time and again we find price isn’t necessarily an indicator of performance,” Steen said.
To determine which multipurpose surface cleaners are the best and worst, CHOICE tests each one on pre-soiled melamine tiles.
It also uses a spectrophotometer tool to read how much dirt is on the tiles before and after scrubbing.
Testing looked at the level of dirt on a surface before and after being scrubbed with the cleaner.
The review also looked at window and glass cleaners, with Windex Ammonia-Free and Windex Original scoring an impressive 100 per cent CHOICE expert rating.
However, to get the best results out of a surface cleaner it helps to follow the instructions listed on the product. This is because some cleaners, especially antibacterial ones, require dwell time to kill germs and/or break down grease.
