Prince William interrupts Easter break with Kate Middleton and kids to send important message

Prince William has interrupted his Easter break to send a personal message on social media, marking his first public words since the Princess of Wales revealed her cancer diagnosis.

Since Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis several weeks ago, William has been spending time with her and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who are on their school holidays. The family are spending the Easter holidays together as they adjust to Kate’s diagnosis, which was discovered in post-operative tests following her major abdominal surgery. The Prince of Wales is not expected to return to royal duties until his three children return to school after the holidays.

However, on Wednesday he took to social media to react to the news that England Lionness Rachel Daly has decided to retire from international football. The 32-year-old Aston Villa striker won 84 caps for England and was part of the European Championship-winning side in 2022, where she started every game in the tournament.

Rachel revealed her news on social media and on X, formerly Twitter, she shared a series of photos representing her country with the caption: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” And William, the president of the Football Association and a huge Villa supporter shared the post, writing: “Thank you for so many unforgettable performances with @Lionesses, @RachelDaly3. Plenty more goals for Villa now!” The post ended with the letter W, denoting it was a personal tweet from the prince.

The message comes as William continues to balance supporting his wife and family and maintaining his official duties, as he has done since her operation in January. The prince is due to return to public duties after his children return to school following the Easter break. It is not known how long Kate will be receiving treatment but it is understood she may be keen to attend events as and when she feels able to, in line with medical advice, although this will not indicate a return to full-time duties.

Meanwhile, Kate has surprised several royal fans with a ‘beautiful’ gesture – just weeks after revealing her cancer diagnosis. When news of her surgery was made public in mid-January, well-wishers from around the globe sent get-well messages and cards to Kate with their best wishes. And over the past few days, many have taken to social media to show the replies being sent to them from Kensington Palace on behalf of the princess.

One of them is X user Allexmarie, who posted a photo of the thank you card she received after sending a get-well card when Kate’s surgery was announced. The card, with the Kensington Palace letterhead, reads: “Thank you for your kind well wishes to Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales. Your thoughtful gesture is very much appreciated.”

And Allexmarie wrote: “Today I received this beautiful acknowledgement and I can honestly say I shall treasure this my entire life. The envelope has Kensington Palace on the back lol hubby thought he was going to have to get his suit out for a garden party (silly him) but he is just as blown away as I am to receive this beautiful and much-treasured card. Continued prayers and healing to our beautiful Princess of Wales.”

In the hours after Kate announced her cancer news, both she and William were said to be “enormously touched” and “extremely moved” by the public’s warmth and support. A Kensington Palace spokesperson said: “The prince and princess are both enormously touched by the kind messages from people here in the UK, across the Commonwealth and around the world in response to Her Royal Highness’ message.

“They are extremely moved by the public’s warmth and support and are grateful for the understanding of their request for privacy at this time.”
