Some of South Korea’s biggest celebrities are set to star in upcoming series for Disney+.

Ahead of the streaming platform’s November 2021 launch in South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, The Walt Disney Company shared some of its upcoming Asia-focused content, in particular content created in partnership with Korean production companies.

The company aims to introduce around 50 original Asia-focused releases to Disney+ by 2023.

The platform will feature action drama Moving, based on a popular Korean webtoon, and two K-pop star powered dramas: Snowdrop, a romantic melodrama featuring Jung Hae-in and Blackpink’s Jisoo, and Rookies, a coming-of-age drama series set in a police academy featuring ex-Wanna One member Kang Daniel.

Another series, Grid, will be created by the writer behind the hit series Stranger, while a romantic fantasy series called Kiss Sixth Sense is also set to find a home on Disney+.

Beyond scripted content, Disney+ will also air a spin-off of the popular variety series Running Man, called Outrun by Running Man, featuring entertainers Kim Jong-kook, Haha, Jee Seok-jin, Song Ji-hyo and Yang Se-chan. It will also stream Blackpink: The Movie, the girl group’s documentary celebrating their fifth anniversary.

The news came a day after rival streaming platform Netflix announced that Korean television series Squid Game had become it’s most popular original series ever.

Disney has announced a variety of other Asia-focused content from Japan, Indonesia, Greater China and Australia, including Twisted Wonderland, an anime adaptation of the Disney-themed mobile game of the same name.
