Jon Stewart Tearfully Mourns His Dog, Dipper, Who Died Over the Weekend

Jon Stewart took time at the end of Monday’s Daily Show episode to remember his dog Dipper, who died on Sunday.

The host shared the story of how he ended up adopting the pooch. He recalled that around 12 or 13 years ago, his children wanted to raise money for New York City-based no-kill animal shelter, Animal Haven. So they baked cupcakes and held a bake sale at the shelter.

“As a little extra incentive, [the shelter] brought out this one-ish-year-old brindle pitbull,” he said, stopping himself as he began to tear up. “[He had been] hit by a car in Brooklyn and lost his right leg,” Stewart added, choking back tears.

“They put the dog in my lap and we left that day feeling really good that we’d helped this great organization – and we also left with this oneish-year-old brindle pitbull,” Stewart continued. “We called him Dipper. In a world of good boys, he was the best.”

Stewart shared that Dipper would go with him to the Daily Show set “every day” and was part of the “OG Daily Show dog crew.” He recalled that Dipper would patiently wait for him while he was taping the show. During the dog’s time on set, the canine had the opportunity to meet “actors and authors and presidents and kings,” Stewart said.

“He did what the Taliban could not do, which is put a scare into Malala Yousafzai,” he quipped, showing a behind-the-scenes clip of the activist walking away from Dipper.

Stewart noted that upon Dipper’s death the dog was “ready.” He added, “He was tired-but I wasn’t.” The family was able to gather to give Dipper their goodbyes at his time of passing.

He then directed a message towards the audience, expressing hope that they too find the love of an amazing pet someday. “My wish for you is one day, you find that dog, that one dog that just is the best,” he said, before showing footage of Dipper playing in the snow, which was Monday night’s “Moment of Zen.”

The news of Dipper’s passing was previously announced in the Daily Show Dogs Instagram account. The message, accompanied by a series of photos of the dog on set, read: “Adopted from @animalhaven, Dipper was a 3-legged Pit Bull mix that came to The Daily Show in his early years and fit in perfectly with all of his furry and human coworkers. He’ll be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.”
