The Bronco Everglades Challenges You to Explore

It isn’t the biggest or baddest Bronco, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t right up there with the best.

Now that we’ve had a few years to acclimate ourselves to the reborn Ford Bronco, the Blue Oval is finally ready to start rolling out some special edition models. While the Bronco Raptor has understandably captured the most amount of enthusiast interest, it isn’t the only new Bronco worth getting excited about. Designed with the wants of overlanders in mind, the new 2022 Bronco Everglades has arrived packed with accessories aimed at getting you further off the grid. Ford invited R&T up to run the Everglades on Northern Michigan’s Drummond Island, where it survived some of the Midwest’s most difficult trails.

Mechanically, the Everglades is nearly identical to a Bronco in Black Diamond trim optioned with the Sasquatch off-road package. That means the truck packs the upgraded HOSS 2.0 suspension setup with front and rear locking differentials, improved underbody protection, 17-inch Carbonized Gray wheels, and upgraded 35-inch Goodyear mud terrain tires. Unlike the Black Diamond models, the Everglades will be exclusively offered as a four-door SUV. There are a few unique tweaks made to heighten the Everglades status within the lineup, such as relocated vents on the axles, transfer case and gearbox for an improved wading depth of 36.4 inches. The package also brings the popular modular steel bumper from Ford Performance, complete with a 10,000 lb Warn Zeon 10S winch on the front. That winch isn’t an off-the-shelf unit, as Ford’s testing and corrosion validation for the accessory led to the adoption of different fasteners, a different hook from the Warn catalog, and a unique powder coating setup for additional protection. The automaker also opted to utilize 100-ft of synthetic chord in place of a traditional metal unit for some added safety should anything go wrong. The winch has also been integrated with the SUVs driver aid systems, which is something the automaker notes isn’t the case when turning to the aftermarket. With over 100 pounds added to the tip of the truck’s nose, Ford SUV program manager Michael House further noted that the Everglades is running a unique spring rate and damping combination to compensate.

The Bronco Everglades is also the first Ford product to leave the factory with an integrated snorkel, which is one of the best parts of this package. Not only does the high-mounted intake allow you to wade through some seriously deep water, (more on that later) but it brings an entirely new aural character to the familiar 2.3-liter EcoBoost. It may make the same 300 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque as other four-cylinder Broncos, but the Everglades brings some sweet tuner car instrumentation that is hard to ignore. Unfortunately owners will only get to play the sweet turbo tunes with the help of Ford’s 10-speed automatic gearbox. The powertrain combination was made carefully, as it brings the most payload capacity of the Bronco lineup. That’s important when you expect customers to add a ton of hardware and camping gear to your product. The automatic also brings a 67.8:1 crawl ratio, which is welcomed on the trails. Other Everglades identifiers include a unique graphics package, squared fenders that hark back to the first generation truck, as well as the exclusive Desert Sand exterior hue. Other exterior hues include Eruption Green, Area 51, Shadow Black and Cactus Gray.

Inside the Bronco Everglades you’ll find a marine-grade vinyl interior with wash-out ready rubber floors, which comes complimented by Everglades-exclusive Urban Green accents throughout. The mix of materials proved incredibly straightforward to clean, and doesn’t feel cheap or lackluster despite this. That is perhaps helped by the fact that all Everglades models will come equipped with Mid package interior content, and get some additional goodies like the 12-inch Sync 4-equipped infotainment system. That bonus content will make customers happy, but we yearned for some High/Lux package items during our testing. The lack of those pricier package’s front trail camera was particularly noticeable on this trek across the Upper Peninsula, and is something that a trail-focused package honestly ought to have. (You do get one on the Braptor, for instance.)

Located in Lake Huron on the border with Canada, Drummond Island is home to some of the best off-roading that Michigan has to offer. Like the state itself, the island features a sprawling combination of rocky beaches, dense forests and thoroughly soggy swamp land. This presents visitors with the opportunity to wheel their 4x4s through a variety of different types of trails, all of which require a different approach. It is exactly the sort of place that the Bronco Everglades was born to visit, mirroring some of the Florida scenery for which it is named.

Ford

After catching a ferry over from the mainland, I began my Everglades overlanding experience with a short blast down the pavement. As the familiar package content would suggest, there is nothing about the Bronco Everglades that behaves dramatically different from a normal Sasquatch-equipped model on the street. As such, this Bronco is not a punishing place to spend time on the highway as long as the presence of wind noise is something you can handle. The relative peace of the highway cruise wouldn’t last long, as things get serious fast on the trails at Drummond Island. Within moments of turning off the pavement and kicking the SUV into Mud/Ruts mode, I found myself up to my rock rails in a thick concrete-like sludge. Michigan has had a wet spring, and the northern marshland isn’t ready to let go of that moisture quite yet. While I processed exactly what was in store for me for the rest of the day, the Everglades clawed through the ruts with all the surefootedness one could ask for.

The rutted mud soon gave way to large river-like sections of deep water. Driving a vehicle through water isn’t inherently difficult; beneath the surface is where dangers have a chance to hide. With water approaching three-feet deep in some sections, there were more than a few larger rocks and downed logs completely obstructed from view. Combined with the constant wake created by the trucks ahead, driving became rock roulette. While I’m certain I didn’t hurt the Everglades in any way, those rock rails might have found use once or twice. Whether Ford intended to or not, I can confirm that it has built a fairly competent watercraft.

Free from the first real swim of the day, we pushed along towards the Marble Head Loop, which is one of the more difficult 3.7-mile sections of the park. The star of this area is an obstacle known as The Steps, a tricky rock shelf leading up to the titular cliff overlooking Lake Huron. With both lockers activated, the SUV had little trouble clawing its way up the fairly vertical boulders. The Everglades’ Rock Crawl mode allows for easy throttle and brake modulation for stepping off of obstacles as well, providing plenty of confidence when tackling the tougher lines. The SUV did tend to hold onto gears longer than I’d like while in 4L, but a little tap of the throttle ultimately caused the truck to surge before grabbing the next gear and settling back down. Not a huge complaint, as the system itself proved mightily capable.

The Steps provided a great location for a winch demonstration, which is exactly the sort of obstacle that could ruin a solo off-roading trip in a hurry. That is exactly why this truck comes outfitted with a winch to begin with, as the whole package aims to assist in the go anywhere mantra of overlanding. The winches also proved important again later in the day when it came time to extract one of the spotter trucks from another less-than-ideal line.

After taking on Marble Head, it was only natural that we took the Bronco Everglades to the swampiest place we could find. Log Jam Hole is one of the most interesting obstacles at Drummond Island, as its condition is incredibly weather dependent. Thankfully for Ford, we all arrived when conditions were at their absolute worst. Cutting through the marshy bog is a collection of downed and dying trees, which become entirely submerged by a little stream when the snow melts in the spring. While beautiful to see, it is a little disconcerting to drive through. The sound of the water bouncing off the doors put me right back on my dad’s boat when I was a kid, as the plunge went on for more than a quarter mile. That’s plenty of time to think about which lure you’re going to be using that morning, or to change which podcast is on the stereo.

We’d spend the rest of the afternoon cutting and crossing our way across the other remaining trails at Drummond Island with little drama to speak of. After a few hours behind the wheel, I no longer carried the same fear of damaging the truck. The Everglades proved that it was a capable companion, even in the hands of those in the group who had never taken a Bronco off-road. Outside of spotter losing a fender during that rescue attempt, none of the vehicles were truly damaged over the course of 10 hours of off-roading. That might not seem like much of an accomplishment, but I assure you that speaks more to how well the truck is designed than how talented us drivers were on that day.

The Bronco Everglades highlights exactly why there is room in the Bronco portfolio for performance models outside of the Raptor. While that truck is an incredibly stout desert runner, the Raptor’s wider bodywork would’ve prevented it from making it around Drummond Island without some reshaped body panels. That truck’s added horsepower and torque also would’ve made no difference on Drummond, as there was little room to use any throttle to begin with. The Everglades might not have a ton of unique hardware like the Raptor, but this package was never intended to be purchased as a completed project. Ford believes that Everglades customers will continue to add to these SUVs, and hopes to support that effort with their extensive portfolio of accessories. While the four-door body style does bolster that plan, it is a shame the Everglades can’t be had in a two-door spec.

Ford

Only current Bronco reservation holders will have a chance to purchase the Everglades trim in 2022. Ford’s Mark Grueber told R&T that this is the company’s way of thanking those customers for dealing with the long wait times associated with the Bronco ordering process. If you happen to be on that list, be prepared to spend at least $54,495 to get into the Everglades. For reference, a similarly equipped Black Diamond starts at around $50,595, and that SUV doesn’t include the winch or the integrated snorkel. If you truly plan on doing some overlanding or solo off-roading with your Bronco, the Everglades is where you want to be.
