Coronavirus still strongly present in Staphorst

Staphorst leads the way when it comes to corona infections in the Netherlands at the moment: 225 people were tested positive last week, out of a population of 17,000 people. In the fight against the spread of the virus, the Hersteld Hervomde Church in the village will limit the number of churchgoers from Sunday.

Nieuwsuur speaks with the Church in Staphorst. Ernst Kuipers, the chairman of the National Network Acute Care, also has a say.

Companies are investing massively in meat and dairy substitutes

They are springing up like mushrooms: about 260 companies in the Netherlands are now involved in the protein transition, the development of, for example, meat and dairy substitutes. That is more than doubling compared to 2010. And they don’t just have to do it for a better world: anyone who develops a good plant-based alternative has gold in their hands.

Nieuwsuur speaks with entrepreneurs: from two farmers’ sons from Twente, to a multinational that has raised hundreds of millions in a year and a half to take over vegan companies, among other things.

How justified is the ‘iconoclasm’ in the United States?

One statue after another is being pulled from its plinth in the United States. Images of commander Robert E. Lee, in particular, are being removed at a rapid pace.

Is that right? Nieuwsuur speaks with American historian Jonathan Jones and goes with him to the grave of the most important general and Lee’s right-hand man: Stonewall Jackson.
