The Blue Cross believes the pandemic may have exacerbated the position of alcoholics in Norway

The Blue Cross believes the pandemic may have exacerbated the position of alcoholics in Norway

Last year, 386 alcohol-induced deaths were registered in Norway. Blue Cross believes the corona pandemic may have exacerbated the position of alcoholics in the country.

A total of 386 alcohol-induced deaths were registered in 2020. That is an increase of 77 deaths from 2019, according to figures from the National Institute of Public Health’s (FHI) cause of death register.

Blue Cross division director Kjetil Haga told P4 that he believes the corona pandemic may have worsened the situation for alcohol addicts.

“We fear that those who consumed too much alcohol have had increased problems throughout the year,” he said.

Most people in the group of 386 alcohol-induced deaths – 181 individuals- died of alcohol poisoning.
