Whether you are a veteran runner or a newcomer, you are probably aware that stretching is an integral part of running – so that makes yoga a perfect companion exercise.

Yoga instructor Holly Cooper, from the Rockwater collective, has recommended that runners add regular yoga to their regimens to help them achieve optimal results. Here are three reasons why adding the gentle low-intensity activity to your routine is beneficial.

Preventing injury

Yoga, which is a low-impact form of exercising, can help you prevent injuries through a variety of stretches and encourage you to develop a stronger mind-body connection.

“Yoga can make you more aware of your running technique and posture, as the practice teaches you to become more intuitive to sensations, feelings and discomfort,” says Holly.

Improved speed

A regular yoga routine alongside frequent running can result in improved speed as well as well-deserved recovery time.

“In order to improve your performance such as your speed, adequate rest through gentle yoga or sleep is essential to give your body enough time to replenish your energy (glycogen) stores and allow muscles to recover,” Holly explains.

Improved mental state

Yoga is a great way to unwind, centre your thoughts, and practice steadying your breathing, making it the perfect running companion.

“Yoga teaches us to steady our breathing, to witness what’s going on with that mental chatter and to control our reaction,” the expert states.
