South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp top scored with 75 against Australia at North Sydney Oval.
Australia could count the cost of sloppy fielding as an improved South Africa set their hosts 234 for victory in a rain-affected second ODI at North Sydney Oval.
Adding to Australia’s concerns, newly minted Belinda Clark Award winner Ash Gardner reported tightness in her right hamstring and did not return after an hour-long rain delay.
The two rain delays, which totalled 70 minutes, cut each innings by five overs and meant Australia would chase a slightly higher total than the Proteas’ actual 6-229.
With a chance to close out the best-of-three-series, the ICC’s top-ranked ODI side dropped five catches after winning the toss and electing to bowl on Wednesday.
Australia twice spilt Marizanne Kapp (75), who went on to make a second half-century in as many games and push her side well past the 105 they made in the series opener.
Spinner Alana King dropped Kapp on 37 off her own bowling before Alyssa Healy fumbled her aground on 45 after Kim Garth’s ball was edged right to her.
Healy appeared to hurt her right hand, the same she injured breaking up a fight between her pet dogs late last year, but the wicketkeeper played on.
Kapp showed no signs of the elbow injury that forced her to retire hurt in the series opener and notched 12 fours before being caught at extra cover by Phoebe Litchfield.
The pair of drops came after Ellyse Perry missed Anneke Bosch on 1 in the deep, with the South African No.3 going on to revitalise the Proteas from 1-0 after three balls to add 43 to her score.
Georgia Wareham then dropped Sune Luus (19) to add to the Australians’ frustrations in slippery conditions.
Apparently immune to the catching woes, Annabel Sutherland caught both Bosch and Luus at long on from Ash Gardner’s bowling (2-31) before they could build too much on their starts.
Gardner did not return after the first of two rain delays with young quick Darcie Brown replacing her in the field.
Any long-term injury would be problematic ahead of next week’s Test match with allrounder Gardner impressing in the one-off Ashes Test match and bowling well in the red-ball clash with India last year.
King came up with a second drop at short fine leg in the penultimate over, spilling Chloe Tryon (37no), who went on to add three more boundaries and beef South Africa’s score.
