Strong winds have stopped firefighting aircraft from taking to the air to battle blaze that has forced the evacuation of coastal communities in Tasmania’s north-west.

On Sunday afternoon, Tasmania Fire Service district officer Dean Graue said crews were actively responding to a bushfire at Port Latta, on Tasmania’s north-west coast, with an Emergency Warning issued for Crayfish Creek and surrounds.

“The Crayfish Creek Caravan Park has been evacuated. An evacuation centre has been set up at Rocky Cape Community Hall, 19074 Bass Highway, Rocky Cape.”

Mr Graue said because of “severe wind gusts”, aircraft had been unable to fly, but said ground crews were “actively working to bring the bushfire under control”.

“Due to the location of the fire, police have closed the Bass Highway to all traffic in both directions between Mawbanna Road and Loosemores Road and members of the public are asked to avoid the area,” he said.

Mr Graue said motorists in the area should slow down to ensure the safety of our emergency services workers.

“The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that strong winds are expected to peak later this afternoon, before reducing this evening.

“It is imperative people keep up-to-date with information to keep safe.”

People in the affected areas are urged to stay informed of the latest updates and monitor conditions locally by visiting the Tasalert website and listening to ABC Northern Tasmania.
