Sean McVay confirmed Tuesday that he plans to be back as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams during the 2024 season.

The Rams clinched a playoff berth with their Week 17 win against the New York Giants and have won three games in a row and six of their last seven.

After making a pair of appearances in the Super Bowl across McVay’s first five seasons with the Rams from 2017-2021 (including a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in February 2022), Los Angeles fell to 5-12 last year.

The team’s offense saw starting quarterback Matthew Stafford and Super Bowl LVI MVP wide receiver Cooper Kupp both limited to nine games due to injuries and little production from the running backs. On defense, three-time AP Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald missed six games because of a sprained ankle.

Following the difficult 2022 campaign and amid heavy speculation, McVay confirmed in January 2023 that he would return for the next season. In March, the 37-year-old said his decision to return was likely going to be for “years to come.”

The health and play of Stafford, Kupp and Donald, plus a dominant season from second-year running back Kyren Williams, have spearheaded the Rams playoff berth.

The one-time Pro Bowl signal-caller has missed just one game and has posted a completion percentage of over 70% in four of his last five contests. Stafford’s also had five games with over 300 passing yards this year (including the last two weeks) after recording just one in 2022.

Stafford’s favorite wideout missed the first four games of 2023 with a hamstring issue but has been mostly solid since his return. Kupp is second only to rookie sensation Puka Nacua for the team lead in targets (95), receptions (59) and receiving yards (737) and is tied with the first-year pro with a team-high five touchdowns.

Since scoring two touchdowns in Week 1, Williams has been the Rams starter in the backfield all season. He missed four games from Weeks 7-11 due to a sprained ankle but still leads the squad by a wide margin in rushing attempts (228), rushing yards (1,144) and rushing touchdowns (12) while adding 32 catches for 206 yards and three touchdowns via 48 targets.

Despite the missed time, the Notre Dame product is second in the NFL only behind Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers in rushing yards.

Donald has suited up for all 16 games thus far and leads the Rams in quarterback hits (23) and tackles for loss (16) and is second to Kobie Turner in sacks (8.0).
