Police cordon on Renown Street

People living within the safety cordon in Plymouth are refusing to leave their homes, it’s emerged. It comes after a World War Two bomb was found in Keyham.

There are 1,219 houses inside the cordon, home to 3,250 people. Everyone was asked to leave by 9am on Thursday morning.

A 309m cordon is now in place. Residents were asked to leave so that bomb disposal teams could work safely. Photos from the scene show mostly empty streets, but not everyone has left.

One lady, who lives on North Down Crescent and says her property does not fall into the cordon, told PlymouthLive: “I’m not going, they can come and get me. I’m clearly outside the cordon, I’ve got a two-year-old to look after.”

The Dartmoor Rescue Service are helping Devon and Cornwall Police, as well as Royal Navy personnel going door to door, as other people inside the cordon are adamant they are not leaving.

Plymouth City Council issued a criticla incident alert this week when a suspected bomb from the Second World War was uncovered in a garden in Keyham. The police were alerted to the discovery in St Michael Avenue at 10.26am on Tuesday.

Plymouth Life Centre opened at 7am as a help centre. People who had to leave their homes can go there to get support, use the creche, or find a space for kids and teenagers to stay.

People can also get an emergency pack with things like soap, towels, and toothbrushes. A centre spokesperson said: “If you are leaving home today due to the evacuation and require any help or support please go to there and staff will be able to help.”

They added: “Please remember – if you need help or support evacuating – please call: 01752 668000.”
