Cadila Pharmaceuticals announced the launch of the first-ever aqueous injection of Vitamin D, a formulation of cholecalciferol. It is expected that this injection will revolutionise the treatment of Vitamin D. This formulation of Vitamin D injection outperforms the oil-based cholecalciferol preparations that are available in the market.

Vitamin D deficiency is a serious health concern and impacts nearly 1 billion people worldwide, according to Cleveland Clinic.

The deficiency of this vitamin can lead to a range of complications if not addressed. It primarily affects bone health, leading to conditions such as rickets in children, which is characterized by bone softening, and osteomalacia in adults, causing bone pain and muscle weakness. Vitamin D deficiency can also cause osteoporosis, increasing the risk of fractures.

Along with the skeletal system, low levels of Vitamin D have been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, and infections. It can impact mental health as well, contributing to depression and cognitive decline. It can also affect your immune system, wherein your body’s ability to fight off infections might be compromised, making you more susceptible to illnesses.

A report in ET Pharma.com says that the new injection from Cadila Pharmaceuticals provides a special remedy that quickly corrects vitamin D insufficiency. This innovation represents a substantial improvement in patient care since it not only increases treatment efficacy but also guarantees a simple and painless administration procedure.

The new aqueous formulation shows notable improvements in the drug’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties.

Dr. Rajiv I. Modi, Chairman and Managing Director of Cadila Pharmaceuticals, said, “Our commitment to innovation and patient centric research to bridge the gap in areas of unmet medical need has driven the development of this ground-breaking aqueous cholecalciferol injection. We believe this advancement will redefine the landscape of Vitamin D deficiency treatment and ensure better treatment outcomes.”

Dr. Vijayesh Gupta, COO- BSBU, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, added, “With the launch of the world’s first aqueous Vitamin D injection, Cadila Pharmaceuticals reaffirms its dedication to providing cutting-edge healthcare solutions. We anticipate this innovation will help clinicians to better design their treatment protocols for Vitamin D deficient patients and a large number of patients will benefit from the next generation, world’s first aqueous injectable Vitamin D.”

What are aqueous injections?

Aqueous injection refers to a preparation and delivery method wherein a drug is dissolved in a water-based solution and administered directly into the body through injection. This technique is widely used for drugs that are readily soluble in water and require rapid onset of action. Aqueous injections are commonly administered via intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) or subcutaneous (SC) routes, depending on the drug’s properties and the required therapeutic effect. The preparation of aqueous injections demands strict aseptic techniques and adherence to pharmaceutical guidelines to ensure the sterility, stability and safety of the solution. This form of drug delivery is advantageous for achieving precise dosing, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract, and ensuring immediate drug availability in the system, making it critical for emergency medications, vaccines and treatments requiring fast and efficient absorption.

Other ways to fight Vitamin D deficiency

Increase Sunlight Exposure

Aim for 10-30 minutes of midday sunlight several times a week as it helps to stimulate Vitamin D production in the skin.

Dietary Sources

Add Vitamin D-rich foods into your diet, including fatty fish (like salmon, mackerel, and sardines), egg yolks, liver and fortified foods.

Supplements

Consider taking a Vitamin D supplement, especially if you have limited sun exposure or dietary intake. Vitamin D3 supplements are often recommended for their effectiveness in raising and maintaining Vitamin D levels.

Avoid Excessive Sunscreen Use When Possible

While sunscreen is crucial for preventing skin cancer, small amounts of unprotected sun exposure can help boost Vitamin D levels.

Consider UV Lamps and Bulbs

For people with limited sun exposure, using a UV lamp or bulb that emits UVB radiation can be an effective way to produce Vitamin D.

Increase Magnesium Intake

Magnesium is important for Vitamin D synthesis and function. Including magnesium-rich foods, like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, can improve Vitamin D metabolism.
