Suella Braverman warns the Tories are 'heading for a defeat' at the general election unless Rishi Sunak moves to the Right - but rules out running to replace him (for now)

Suella Braverman today warned the Tories are ‘heading for a defeat’ at the general election as she reiterated her demand for Rishi Sunak to ‘change course’.

The former home secretary, who was sacked by Mr Sunak in November, urged the Prime Minister to ‘improve the offer’ to British voters before they go to the polls.

Mrs Braverman called for further tax cuts, a greater clampdown on migration, and fresh measures on national security, social cohesion and extremism.

She claimed Mr Sunak’s current approach in all these areas was ‘insufficient’.

The ex-Cabinet minister is regularly touted as a possible replacement for Mr Sunak as Tory leader.

But, speaking to LBC Radio, Mrs Braverman ruled herself out of a leadership bid for the time being.

The latest Redfield & Wilton Strategies poll showed Reform UK were supported by 15% of voters. This compared to Labour on 44%, the Tories on 21%, and Lib Dems on 10%

‘I’m not thinking about any kind of leadership campaign,’ the Fareham MP said. ‘Rishi Sunak is our PM, I fully expect him to lead us into the next general election.’

Since being fired from the Home Office last year, Mrs Braverman has been a thorn in Mr Sunak’s side and has been critical of the PM’s efforts to ‘stop the boats’.

She continued her attack on Mr Sunak’s migration policies this morning as she expressed her fears about the fate of the Tories ahead of the general election.

‘I’m very concerned, I’m very concerned about what poll after poll demonstrates,’ Mrs Braverman said.

‘It’s my job – and I sought to do this as home secretary – to speak honestly, to speak the truth, even if it may be uncomfortable.

‘I owe that to the people who have sent me to Parliament, and I owe that to you, and so the honest truth is that we are heading for a defeat, to put it mildly, at the general election.

‘I very much hope that we change course and that we improve the offer to the British people.

‘Ultimately, measures on tax cuts, measures on migration, measures on national security and social cohesion and extremism are insufficient by this Government.

‘We need to go further, we need to demonstrate to the British people that we’re on their side, that we’re serious about stopping the boats, that we’re actually serious about curbing unprecedented levels of illegal migration, and unfortunately we haven’t managed to do that.’

Asked why she failed to halt the Channel migrant crisis when she was home secretary, Mrs Braverman replied: ‘I put forward a plan that would have stopped the boats and I wasn’t allowed to deliver that plan by the PM.’

The ex-Cabinet minister declined to agree the Tories were facing a ‘catastrophic’ general election defeat under Mr Sunak.

But Mrs Braverman said: ‘At the moment I am very, very worried about the prospect of a Labour government.’

She added: ‘I am horrified by the prospect of a Labour government and I see it as my job to speak honestly and truthfully, to my colleagues and the country, that we must do everything that we can in our power to prevent that happening.’
