A teacher has launched a campaign to obtain Wales a position in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Sara Davies, from Llandysul in Ceredigion, who is also a singer-songwriter, has claimed it does not ‘make sense’ that the country can not ‘compete as our nation’.

Wales currently participates in the international song competition as part of the UK, with several Welsh artists representing the country in previous years, including Nicky Stevens from Brotherhood of Man who won in 1976.

But for Sara, Wales deserves its own place, which has led her to create Wales4Eurovision, a campaign that’s received a ‘brilliant’ response.

Bringing her campaign to life, Sara joined forces with label Coco & Cwtsh to envision Wales’ performance on stage with her song ‘Anfonaf Angel’, translating to: ‘I Send an Angel’.

‘The response has been brilliant. I had no expectations, but I was hoping it would be a brilliant response and it definitely has been,’ Sara told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast.

Taking to YouTube, the singer explained: ‘Join Sara Davies and her label Coco & Cwtsh in envisioning Wales on the Eurovision stage.

‘Anfonaf Angel’ showcases Wales’s rich musical & production talent, fuelling the cause to make Welsh participation as a nation in our own right a reality.

‘Let’s make history together by supporting this campaign. Like, share, and spread the word to get Cymru to Eurovision.’

MailOnline has contacted Eurovision Song Contest for comment.

Sara’s video for Anfonaf Angel features her performing in bright, glamorous outfits alongside several backup dancers.

The song’s finale sees her looking towards the camera while standing behind angel wings, in line with the song’s title, which translates to ‘I Need an Angel’.

In the radio interview, Sara revealed that the campaign has garnered attention online, with ‘loads’ of people agreeing that Wales should be allowed to compete.

Olly Alexander (centre) will represent the United Kingdom in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest

It comes after Eurovision fans blasted this year’s song contest for being too ‘provocative’ and ‘raunchy’, claiming that the prestigious show is now pandering to Gen Z audiences with flashy ‘X Factor’ style semi-finals.

Fans of the competition, which will be hosted in Malmo, Sweden this year, have been critical of acts including Slovenia’s scantily clad Raiven and Olly Alexander for outfits and dance routines that aren’t ‘family friendly’.

Olly is representing the United Kingdom with his catchy tune Dizzy, and performed the song with plenty of raunchy dance moves.

Ireland’s entry Bambie Thug, 31, a non-binary artist from County Cork has also been criticised for their performance which sees them joined on stage by a male dancer wearing demonic makeup and fake teeth.

Some Eurovision fans tuning into the semi-finals have been left aghast by the adult content on display in the build up to the event and criticised organisers and performers for not reading the room.

One said: ‘In recent years, Eurovision has turned into a farce. Groups with provocative styles and appalling content aren’t even trying to contribute to music; they’re just shocking for the sake of shock.

‘This isn’t talent, it’s absurdity, which repels.’

Another complained: ‘Olly Alexander’s performance was much too raunchy. It needs to be toned down a lot.’

The routine, which is guaranteed to be in Saturday’s final, sees the singer don a distressed vest and red trousers and a colour-coordinated jock strap over the top.

During the performance, Olly sensually runs his hands over the dancer’s shirtless bodies before they thrust to the beat of the song together.

Things began to go pear-shaped during a performance this week when his microphone pack slipped from his trousers forcing him to continue the song while attempting to grab the pack which dangled underneath, no doubt contributing to the ‘shaky’ vocals some fans complained about.

Noting the uncomfortable performance, one fan mused: ‘It seems like some Eurovision fans are worried about Olly Alexander’s vocals after his live performance of the UK entry.

‘The addition of shirtless dancers and raunchy moves may have distracted from his singing abilities. Hopefully he can work on improving his vocals before the competition.’
