NEW DELHI – Shares of

Tata Motors

rose 2 per cent in early trade on Tuesday as the domestic auto giant said that it would increase prices of commercial vehicles (CVs) by around 2.5 per cent from January 1 to tackle an uptick in commodity and raw material costs.

The counter rose to a high of Rs 476.85 as against the previous close of Rs 467.20 on the National Stock Exchange.

The new prices will apply through segments of medium and heavy commercial vehicles, intermediate and light commercial vehicles and small commercial vehicles and buses based on specific models and variants of the vehicle, the company said in an exchange filing on Monday.

“The increase in the prices of commodities such as steel, aluminium and other precious metals, in addition to higher costs of other raw materials, has incited this price hike for CVs,” the regulatory filing said, adding that a steep rise in overall input costs had made it very important to pass through a residual proportion through a minimal price hike.

With input costs rising across the board, major automobile manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki India, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi have already announced increases in prices from the beginning of the new calendar year.

In July-September, Tata Motors posted a consolidated on-year net loss of Rs 4,441 crore. In the same period a year ago, the auto major had reported a net loss of Rs 314 crore and Rs 4,451 crore in the first quarter of the current financial year.

The company’s revenue from operations climbed 14 per cent to Rs 61,378 crore in the quarter under review as against ₹53,530 crore a year ago.
