How KKR fared the previous season: KKR launched a stunning fightback after losing five of the first seven games to qualify for the play-offs. They went all the way to the final, only to end up short against Chennai Super Kings and end runners-up. They won five of the seven matches of the second leg in the UAE and qualified for the final on better run-rate in a two way race with Mumbai Indians.

Kolkata Knight Riders coach Brendon McCullum on Friday said their new skipper Shreyas Iyer has all the qualities to be the franchise’s “player of the decade”.

Iyer, who led Delhi Capitals to their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) final in 2020, was snapped by KKR for Rs 12.25 crore after aggressive bidding and was subsequently made skipper of the two-time former champions.

“He’s a great buy. He could be the franchise player for KKR for the best part of the decade. We’ve got to start somewhere and that’s tomorrow,” the New Zealand great said on the eve of their IPL 15 opening match against defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

It’s no secret that he relishes batting at No 3 but Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer on Saturday said he’s flexible and ready to “explore”, depending upon the team scenario in the upcoming IPL.

“For me personally, I feel No 3 is my batting position because that’s the position I love to bat and have been batting for very long. But I’m flexible whatever the team requires, I’m very comfortable with that. Come what may, I’m ready to explore,” the 27-year-old said during a virtual interaction.

How CSK fared the previous season: Chennai Super Kings had their worst season in 2020 and they finished second from the bottom (7th) in the UAE. Lack of flamboyant and aggressive approach  hurt them as they won just six of their 14 games not qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in the history of IPL. However, they bounced back in style in 2021, winning their fourth title. The finished 2nd on the points table with 9 wins from 14 matches and five losses. They beat table toppers Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1 and then beat KKR in the final to lift the trophy.

From having Virat Kohli as part of the leadership group to learning from ‘captain cool’ MS Dhoni during his stint with CSK, Faf du Plessis is all excited to lead Royal Challengers Bangalore in the upcoming IPL.

“I was lucky enough to play under MS Dhoni for an extremely long time,” the 37-year-old said in an interview on the IPL website.

“I got to see very closely how his brain works. You know how things operate under him which was once again very fortunate for me.”

MS Dhoni has decided to pass the baton to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Dhoni, who has led the team since its inception in 2008, with the exception of two seasons when the team was banned, made this swift decision just two days before the commencement of IPL 2022.

Jadeja will take over as captain, becoming the third player to do so after MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina.

KKR, on the other hand, too have a new leader in the young Shreyas Iyer. They have fire power in the form of Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, Sam Billings in the batting department and the experience of Sunil Narine, Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav in the bowling department.

17:37 (IST)

It’s a new start, a fresh beginning for all the teams as they have undergone a major revamp. Chennai Super Kings will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match. Just 2 days before their opener, MS Dhoni left everyone stunned by announcing that he will be stepping down from captaincy and handed over the baton to Ravindra Jadeja. It will be a huge responsibility for him to fill in the boots of Dhoni.

Preview: The Indian Premier League (IPL) returns for its biggest season on Saturday, with a galaxy of top names and two new franchises expanding the world’s richest cricket competition to 10 teams for its 15th edition.

But crowds in the cricket-mad nation will, initially at least, be limited to 25 per cent capacity with group games restricted to four venues, one in Pune and two in Mumbai and one in Navi Mumbai.

The venues for the three playoff matches and the 29 May final are yet to be announced.

The teams will be divided into two groups of five, based on their previous IPL records, for a 70-match regular season that promises to be the first completed entirely in India since 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The tournament kicks off with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan, at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

Four-time IPL winners Chennai said Thursday that Mahendra Singh Dhoni has handed over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja after making the team one of the most successful since the league started in 2008.
