Kolkata Knight Riders coach Brendon McCullum on Friday said their new skipper Shreyas Iyer has all the qualities to be the franchise’s “player of the decade”.
Iyer, who led Delhi Capitals to their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) final in 2020, was snapped by KKR for Rs 12.25 crore after aggressive bidding and was subsequently made skipper of the two-time former champions.
“He’s a great buy. He could be the franchise player for KKR for the best part of the decade. We’ve got to start somewhere and that’s tomorrow,” the New Zealand great said on the eve of their IPL 15 opening match against defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

It’s no secret that he relishes batting at No 3 but Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer on Saturday said he’s flexible and ready to “explore”, depending upon the team scenario in the upcoming IPL.
“For me personally, I feel No 3 is my batting position because that’s the position I love to bat and have been batting for very long. But I’m flexible whatever the team requires, I’m very comfortable with that. Come what may, I’m ready to explore,” the 27-year-old said during a virtual interaction.

How CSK fared the previous season: Chennai Super Kings had their worst season in 2020 and they finished second from the bottom (7th) in the UAE. Lack of flamboyant and aggressive approach hurt them as they won just six of their 14 games not qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in the history of IPL. However, they bounced back in style in 2021, winning their fourth title. The finished 2nd on the points table with 9 wins from 14 matches and five losses. They beat table toppers Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1 and then beat KKR in the final to lift the trophy.

But crowds in the cricket-mad nation will, initially at least, be limited to 25 per cent capacity with group games restricted to four venues, one in Pune and two in Mumbai and one in Navi Mumbai.
The venues for the three playoff matches and the 29 May final are yet to be announced.
The teams will be divided into two groups of five, based on their previous IPL records, for a 70-match regular season that promises to be the first completed entirely in India since 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
