There’s no denying it’s been a difficult start to the year, but SASSA grant increases in April 2024 should help ease the load. Announced at last month’s budget speech (21 February), Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana stipulated various SASSA grant increases which would take effect next month.

While The South African has reported just how inadequate South African Social Security Agency Old-Age Grants are, because beneficiaries often support households of five or more, an increase is at least a move in the right direction.
SASSA GRANT INCREASES IN APRIL 2024

The good news is SASSA grant increases in April 2024 will amount to an extra R90, with another R10 hike coming later in October. Therefore, SASSA Old-Age Pensions will pay R2 180 for anyone between the ages of 60 and 74. And R2 200 for anyone over 75-years of age.

Of course, SASSA grant increases in April 2024 are not only for older persons. The Foster Care grant will see a boost of R50, while Child Support grants increase by R20, effective April 2024. This goes along with War Veterans, Disability, and Care Dependency grants that all increase by R90 in April 2024 and a further R10 in October, like the SASSA old-age pension (refer to the table of grant increases below).
2024 SASSA GRANT INCREASES
Here’s when SASSA grant increases will take effect for older persons. War veterans, disability and childcare take place concurrently with these dates:
- Wednesday 3 April 2024.
- Friday 3 May 2024.
- Monday 3 June 2024.
- Tuesday 2 July 2024.
- Friday 2 August 2024.
- Tuesday 3 September 2024.
*SASSA reminds beneficiaries that grants may take 2-3 days to reflect in your bank account. Also note that dates from May 2024 still await official SASSA confirmation.
