Taco Bell Midland: Burritos and quesadillas on the menu for Perth's first store

After nearly 60 years and more than 7000 restaurants worldwide, Taco Bell opens its first WA outlet in Midland tomorrow, giving Perthlings a taste of its signature Mexican-inspired menu items.

So, what can we expect? Well, the operative phrase here is “Mexican-inspired”, because the Taco Bell menu bears only a passing resemblance to anything you’d find in the taquerias of Oaxaca.

Just like the flame-grilled patties at Hungry Jack’s and the Colonel’s 11 secret herbs and spices, Taco Bell hangs its sombrero on a couple of signature flavours.

The first is its nacho cheese sauce, which is found in a variety of menu items, and is famously glooped onto the food from a pump dispenser.

It’s cheesier than rom-com era Matthew McConaughey, and unexpectedly spicy due to the invisible addition of what one assumes is jalapeno, so keep that in mind if you’re ordering for the kids.

When it comes to what to order, we’re all familiar with the aforementioned burritos, quesadillas and tacos, but this American chain offers its own twist.

The Crunchwrap Supreme, for instance, is like the toasted hexagonal love child of a quesadilla and a burrito, and combines traditional fillings — your choice of protein, shredded lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream — with a tostada.

The textural contrast between gooey and crunchy adds interest, whether you opt for Taco Bell’s trademark ground beef or something more fancy such as pulled pork or steak strips.

The interplay of textures is present in the Cheesy Double Decker Taco, too, which sees a soft tortilla wrapped around a hard-shell taco, with the space in-between filled with nacho cheese sauce.

No one will ever mistake Taco Bell for haute cuisine — one might diplomatically describe its reputation in America as “unapologetically low-rent” — but the Australian iteration offers a healthier take on the chain’s fan favourites.

The emphasis here is firmly placed on affordability and all standard meal combos cost less than $15, with hard-shell tacos available for as little as $2, and basic burritos and quesadillas on offer for less than $5.

Taco Bell Midland opens at 10am tomorrow, with a variety of opening day giveaways and activities.

PerthNow is giving away a year’s worth of Taco Bell to one lucky reader to enter the draw to win, get your code word on Thursday from your PerthNow local newspaper and register it at perthnow.com.au/win.
