Former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines speaks at the
Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas hasn’t “earned” a spot in the celebration of Women’s History Month, according to rival Riley Gaines.
In a tweet, the 12-time All-American swimmer shamed ESPN for including Thomas in its “Celebrating Women’s Month” segment. Gaines has been very vocal in opposing Thomas and keeping transgender women from competing against biologically-born women at athletic events.
Gaines (who represented Kentucky) previously competed against Thomas (representing Penn State) at the NCAA Championships in 2022 . Gaines and Thomas tied.
“ Lia Thomas is not a brave, courageous woman who EARNED a national title. He is an arrogant, cheat who STOLE a national title from a hardworking, deserving woman. The @ncaa is responsible,” Gaines tweeted on Sunday.
Thomas was interviewed in the ESPN segment and Thomas’ transition from male to female, winning the NCAA title, and criticism were brought up.
“People will say, ‘Oh, she just transitioned so she would have an advantage so she could win.’ I transitioned to be happy,” said Thomas.
Fairness in competition with transgendered women competing against biologically-born females spawned after Thomas became the first transgendered woman to win the Ivy League Championship and NCAA Championship in swimming.
