Guest house handed top awards in hospitality

A guest house in Northumberland has earned top honours for hospitality following aid from a Cumbrian firm.

Situated in the village of Belford, five-star Market Cross received the coveted AA Guest Accommodation of the Year 2023 for England award.

The guest house also took home the gold in the North East England Tourism Awards 2023.

The recent wins are two of many awards won by Market Cross in 2023, including the AA Dinner Award and the AA Award Winning Breakfast award.

The former Georgian coaching house turned bed and breakfast has been under the ownership of Amanda and Steve White since 2012. The pair had purchased the property with support from The Cumberland Building Society, keeping a professional relationship ever since.

The hospitality sector has seen significant challenges in recent years including the Covid-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis.

Amanda and Steve, with the backing of The Cumberland, tackled these issues head-on.

Amanda said: “We’ve been very lucky, especially with the pandemic which really affected the hospitality and tourism sector.

“Two nearby B&Bs unfortunately had to close for good which shows just how hard the area was hit, so we are incredibly grateful for the support we received during that time.”

During the initial Covid-19 lockdowns, Market Cross was granted a six-month mortgage break, then moved on to an interest-only tariff to offset the impact of income loss.

Amanda says their success is down to being able to adapt to changing circumstances.
