Donald Cameron is now a member of the House of Lords
A Scottish Tory MSP will leave Holyrood and join the House of Lords to become a junior Scotland Office minister.
The UK Government announced that Donald Cameron has been given a life peerage on Friday evening.
He will stand down as Conservative MSP for the Highlands and Islands.
There will not be a by-election as Cameron was a list MSP. It is possible he will be replaced by Tim Eagle, who was next on the Conservative Party list for the Highlands and Islands.
It is unclear whether Eagle still wants to become an MSP. Cameron is a moderate Tory who has been an MSP since 2016 and has held a whole host of shadow cabinet roles.
He was most recently the Shadow Constitution Secretary. Previously he was Shadow Health Secretary and Shadow Finance Secretary.
Tory Scotland Secretary Alister Jack said: “I welcome Donald Cameron’s appointment at the Scotland Office.
“He is a talented lawyer as well as an experienced parliamentarian. I know Donald will do a great job helping us to deliver on the priorities of people in Scotland.”
Cameron said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as a UK Government minister and to the House of Lords.
“As part of the Scotland Office team I look forward to continuing our work representing Scotland at the heart of Whitehall, upholding the devolution settlement, and ensuring Scotland continues to benefit from the UK Government’s ambitious Levelling Up agenda.”
