To each his own on COVID-19 protection

Sunday's letters: No COVID mandates, show cannot go on, end filibuster, more
© Charles Sykes, Charles Sykes/Invision/AP Joe Bonamassa, seen here at the Love Rocks NYC concert in 2021, will perform at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in December.

I wish to express my sincere thanks to the author of “No life worth risking for guitarist” for

canceling her tickets to the Dec. 8 Joe Bonamassa concert at the Van Wezel. I was able to pick up second-row tickets the day I read her letter to the editor (Oct. 20).

I am in favor of allowing everyone to make a personal choice about how or whether to protect themselves against the COVID-19 virus.  In other words, I am not in favor of mandates. We are all adults and can make our own reasoned decisions.

Frankly, the letter writer seemed a bit overly concerned about catching the virus.  If she really wants to protect herself, she needs only to wear a N95 mask and use hand sanitizer.

More: How to send a letter to the editor

It is too bad people limit themselves unnecessarily. Just follow the science and make your own decisions. Thanks for the tickets!

Kevin McKiou, Sarasota

State fines force theater to cancel show

We at The Gulf Front Players are deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our audience, performers and crew. Because of this, early on we made a commitment to follow the Safe Arts Sarasota COVID-19 protocols.

These are the same protocols being observed by the Asolo Repertory Theatre, Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Orchestra and others – and for which some of them are now being “investigated.”

Our chosen venue is a charming coffee shop that falls under a food service business category. Currently, the shop could face fines of up to $5,000 every day of our performances, based on the mandates placed on such businesses by the governor and the state.

Accordingly, we have made the painful decision to pull the plug on our November scheduled performances of Music Theatre International’s “All Together Now.” We regret having to make this decision, even though we are not the only community theater in the area to cancel or postpone performances, or even to cancel the entire 2021-2022 season.

Are we the canary in the coal mine? For the sake of the entire arts community in our area, I truly hope not. We are planning for future programs now, as pandemic and political decisions allow.

COVID mandates make life safer

In response to your reader question, I favor private and governmental vaccine mandates aimed at curtailing COVID-19, which has killed over 720,000 Americans.

When I board a full commercial aircraft, I am safer when all passengers and crew are vaccinated. When I board a cruise ship sailing from the United States, I am safer when all passengers are vaccinated, provide proof of a negative COVID test taken within two days of sailing and wear masks in indoor spaces.

When I report for jury duty in Manatee County, I am safer when all police officers, judges, jurors, attorneys and other parties are fully vaccinated.

When I visit any health provider or facility, I am safer when all personnel are vaccinated.

I am fully vaccinated and urge everyone to obtain a free vaccination so that all of us can resume a normal life.

John Flood, Bradenton

Democrats naïve to hold onto filibuster

The Democratic Party’s desire to help children, improve Medicare and reduce climate change may cost $2 trillion over a decade. A scary number, but it’s only $2 per person per day, less than the price of a latte.

Even these modest measures may not pass because in the Senate it takes 60 votes to stop a filibuster impeding a bill.

An exception to the filibuster could be made for this bill, but Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, and Krysten Sinema, of Arizona, want to preserve the filibuster so that Democrats can use it when Republicans have a majority.

So naive. The Republicans are already lying about election results and passing bills so that they can count the votes in the future instead of election officials.

Does anyone really think that when there are 51 Republicans in the U.S. Senate, they will keep the filibuster and let 49 Democrats block their agenda?

Mark Weston, Sarasota

GOP’s actions turn off Sarasota voter

The GOP is the only political party represented on the Charter Review Board, which wants to overturn the will of the voters regarding single-member districts, approved by the majority in a citizens’ initiative.

Republicans are also the only political party represented on the Sarasota County Commission; the commissioners also want to overturn the will of the voters on single-member districts. Redistricting under consideration may bring major gerrymandering.

Republicans hold the majority in the Florida Legislature, which has passed voter suppression laws.

That tells me what I need to know about the Republican Party.

Mirella M. Glasberg, Sarasota
