Sugababes say they're 'grateful and blessed to have the legacy we have' as they tease new music

Two years after the original line-up of the Sugababes reformed, the chart-topping girl group say they feel “blessed” by everything that has happened to them since and are ready to bring some more “bops”.

Mutya Buena, 38, Keisha Buchanan, 39, and Siobhán Donaghy, 39, were just teenagers when they first burst onto the scene back in 1998.

All three left the band one-by-one and new members were brought in, forming a completely different Sugababes than the trio that first formed more than 20 years ago.

The original line-up officially reunited in 2022 to perform a barn-stomping set at Glastonbury Festival which they followed up by supporting Take That at British Summer Time (BST) Hyde Park along with a sold out first ever headlining show at the London O2 Arena.

The icing on the cake came earlier this year when they were recognised with the MOBO Legacy Award.

“We were so humbled and truly grateful,” Buchanan told the Standard in partnership with Absolut vodka. “It was an amazing night! Honestly things mean so much more when you have been through the things that we have.

“We don’t take anything for granted and we are so blessed to have the legacy that we have.”

Their impressive back catalogue of hits includes Stronger, Freak Like Me, Hole In The Head, and Round Round with fans desperately crying out for more. Donaghy has confirmed it’s happening, teasing: “With our new music, it’s always hard to describe as we jump around so much with genres. I feel like we can take it dark and poetic and then also bring the bops!”

Next up, they have joined forces with Absolut Vodka for their Born To Mix campaign. The trio launched the brand’s new honey-flavoured vodka at a special event held at the Absolut Hunni-Hive in London on May 2.

Setting the scene for what the ultimate night out with the Sugababes would look like, Buena said: “Ok, so firstly we would make lots of cocktails! We love a sing song from Michael Jackson, SWV, Whitney Houston and plenty more would be on the list of songs karaoke-style. I reckonSiobhan would call it a night first then Keisha then me. The party would probably be ina nice house somewhere.”

They are also supporting Take That again, but this time at The Greatest Weekend in Malta this October.

Donaghy said: “Supporting Take That was one of my favourite shows of the whole summer. It’s a joy to work with them. Their staging was incredible and I’m looking forward to seeing their show this time around.”

They are also looking forward to checking out the island, adding: “I love planning for us to either arrive early or stay later so we can explore our destination.

“I’ve already started our to do list and will no doubt disappear with the ladies on an adventure or two. I like to think it gets us into the spirit of things!”

Absolut teams up with the iconic Sugababes to launch new honey flavoured vodka – Absolut Hunni – and kick start the Bank Hunni Day weekend. Available to buy at all selected retails.
