Nelly Cora made LPGA history on Sunday when she won the Chevron Championship by a couple of strokes, earning her 5th consecutive win on the LPGA Tour. I’m Ryan Valley with Golf News that I try to break down for you just how impressive Nelly Quarters run has been here so far this season on the LPGA. As I mentioned, she tied the all time LPGA consecutive wins record with her fifth win in a row, winning her second career major championship. She had a tough go of it on Sunday, having to finish about a third of her third round one Sunday morning in very cold conditions and coming back out in the afternoon to play the final round 18. Ultimately, she pulled away from the field, left herself some cushion and got the job done to win again for the fifth time this season, fifth time in as many starts. And that ties the LPGA record set by two Hall of Famers. Nancy Lopez in 1978 when she won in five starts in a row, and Annika Sorenstam when she won five in a row, which spanned the end of the 2004 season into the early portion of the 2005 season, culminating in a win like this win streak at what is now known as the Chevron Championship. Nelly Corta also set the LPGA well, tied the LPGA record for consecutive wins with four wins in as many events played on the schedule, not skipping any tournaments whatsoever. That mark has been done by a number of players. She becomes the latest to do it. She is also the first player since herself when she won her first major championship to win a major and the event before that. And she is the second player in the history of the Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking, which is about 18 years old now. To have won this tournament, the Chevron Championship, as the world number one player. She is on an incredible run right now and frankly no one in her peer group on the LPGA is even close to what she is doing out there on the golf course. She has an opportunity this week to win for a 6th consecutive time and set the LPGA all time consecutive wins record. She is entered to play in the JM Eagle LA Championship at Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles, CA. It’s one of the fan favorite and player favorite stops on the schedule. The purse this year just happens to have been increased to be one of the highest on the LPGA Tour schedule outside the five major championships and the season ending CME Group Tour Championship down in Florida. Heck of a run for Nellie Quarta Long may continue.
