Seasoning Recall in 3 States as Life-Threatening Warning Issued

seasoning recall in 3 states as life-threatening warning issued

A sign for the Food And Drug Administration is seen outside of the headquarters on July 20, 2020 in White Oak, Maryland. The FDA has warned of a seasoning recall in 3 states as it may contain undeclared Soy and Wheat allergen.

Over 700 units of a seasoning have been recalled in three states as they may contain a soy and wheat allergen, sparking concerns of an allergic reaction, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has shared.

Baron Spices of St. Louis, Missouri, issued the recall of 708 units of Blues Hog Sweet and Savory Seasoning, the company said on Tuesday. The affected product was distributed through Giant Food Stores in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware as well as in the District of Columbia.

While no illnesses have been confirmed to date, people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy and wheat run the risk of “serious or life-threatening” reaction if they consume these products, according to the FDA.

According to the Food Allergy Research and Education organization, symptoms of a wheat allergy reaction can range from mild, such as hives, to severe, such as anaphylaxis. In addition, allergic reactions can be unpredictable, as even very small amounts of wheat can cause one.

The affected product is in 6.25 oz plastic bottles with the label Blues Hog Sweet and Savory Seasoning and with the lot numbers 034-363 and 034-364.

According to the company announcement shared by the FDA, the original product did not contain soy or wheat allergens, but a supplier to Baron Spices sent a replacement ingredient without disclosing that it contained soy and wheat.

Newsweek has reached out to Baron Spices via online form for comment.

Consumers who have purchased Blues Hog Sweet and Savory Seasoning are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or to dispose of the product.

Consumers with questions can contact Baron Spices at 1-800-622-2190.

Ice cream products were also recently recalled over undeclared allergens as customers were warned about the risk of “serious or life-threatening” reactions. The FDA shared the announcement from Belgian Yummies of Fort Myers, Florida, on its website on Tuesday.

The company said that its 4-ounce packages of Ice Cream Sandwiches and 5-liter containers and 4.75-liter pans of Gelato had been recalled after discovering that the product was distributed in packaging that did not show “the presence of wheat, soy, egg, coconut and/or peanuts and FD&C Yellow #5.”

“The problem was caused by outdated labels being used during the packaging process,” the release said. The company said that after discovering the issue the labels were immediately corrected and updated ingredient lists were sent to wholesalers.

The recalled products were distributed in Florida to wholesalers and none were available for retail sale. The FDA said it has received no reports of illness in relation to the ice cream to date.
