The activists gathered on the Museumplein around 1 p.m. and started a march through the city shortly after 2 p.m. More than an hour later they were back at the Museumplein.
Young people and the elderly
The demonstrators shouted slogans such as “What do we want? Debt free!” and “Bad luck generation, we demand compensation”. Most of the demonstrators were young people, although elderly people also came to the Museumplein in solidarity with the students, such as Anita Hajee (62) and Ruud Jonker (65). “We’re here for the unlucky generation. There’s one over there,” Hajee said, pointing to her son and his friend. “And we have to stand up for that. To make sure they don’t start their lives with debt already.”
A 25-year-old woman from Leiden said she had come to Amsterdam because her generation had been “the guinea pig of the loan system” for the government. “The loan system isn’t working, that’s for sure.”
Without incident
President Ama Boahene of the National Student Union (LSVb) said that the demonstration went without incident. A police spokesperson said he had no other idea.
Basic grant back from 2023
The student loan system came into effect in 2015. Before that time, students received a basic grant, a few hundred euros a month, which in most cases did not have to be repaid. This basic grant will return from 2023. According to the plans of the cabinet, the generation of students who did not receive a student grant in the intervening years will be compensated for the extra money they had to borrow.
Reimbursement of 1000 to 2000 euros per person
The National Student Union (LSVb) and FNV Young & United calculate that the 1 billion euros that the cabinet will earmark for this, amounts to a compensation of 1000 to 2000 euros per person. The unions think that is far too little. “Our generation should not be the victims of a failed government austerity experiment.”
