‘Stuck Huawei chief and US justice close deal’

Meng was arrested in Canada in 2018. The United States accused her of lying about trade contacts with an Iranian company, which is subject to US sanctions. For example, she would have misled the bank HSBC about this.

Meng had to remain in the Canadian city of Vancouver pending extradition to the US. US prosecutors now allow Meng to return to her home country of China, according to business newspaper The Wall Street Journal. A court in New York is expected to consider the settlement on Friday. Meng would participate in it via video connection from Canada.

Meng’s arrest put a lot of pressure on relations between China on the one hand and the US and Canada on the other. Shortly after the arrest, China detained two Canadians. One of them, Michael Spavor, was sentenced in August to 11 years in prison for espionage.
