Shubman Gill misses century but India’s lead swells against England

NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill narrowly missed reaching a century, yet India managed to extend their lead to 440 runs by lunch on day four of the third Test against England this Sunday.

Having secured a significant first-innings advantage of 126 runs, India dominated proceedings, reaching 314-4 at the break, posing a formidable challenge to England’s chances in the match.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had retired hurt after scoring a century on Saturday, returned to the crease and was unbeaten on 149, supported by Sarfaraz Ahmed on 22 runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who had flown home due to a family emergency on Friday, has rejoined the squad, as confirmed by the Indian cricket board.

Starting the day at 196-2, Gill appeared set for a century, while Kuldeep Yadav (27), filling in as the nightwatchman on day three, further compounded England’s woes with aggressive batting against the spinners.

However, a mix-up between Gill and Kuldeep led to Gill being run out for 91, despite a desperate dive to save his wicket. Kuldeep was later dismissed by Rehan Ahmed, but India retained control of the match.

With the series currently tied at 1-1, the outcome of this five-Test series hangs in the balance.
