Andy Murray lands tough Australian Open draw – who Cameron Norrie, Emma Raducanu and rest of Brits will face

Andy Murray has landed a tough draw for the Australian Open as the only British player to face a seeded opponent in the opening round.

The five-time former finalist will take on 30th-rated Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry in his first round match on Sunday in the first Grand Slam event of the 2024 season. Should the Scot make the third round, he would expect to find himself up against top seed Novak Djokovic, who will open against a qualifier. Murray warmed up for the tournament with a first win of the season against Dominic Thiem at the Kooyong Classic on Thursday. While only in an exhibition event, the 6-4, 6-2 victory is an important morale-booster for Murray, who lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the first round of the Brisbane International last week before falling to defeat against Marin Cilic at Kooyong on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Cameron Norrie sparked fears ahead of the Australian Open by pulling out of his quarter-final at the ASB Classic with a wrist injury. The British number one had been due to face Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in Auckland, the city where he grew up, but withdrew just before the scheduled start. Wrist issues can be notoriously problematic for tennis players but the word from Norrie’s camp was it was a precautionary decision prior to travelling to Melbourne, where he has been drawn to face Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas in the first round. Norrie reached the final in Auckland 12 months ago and will drop outside the top 20 for the first time since October 2021 on Monday.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Jack Draper will square up against American Marcos Giron while Dan Evans will play Italian Lorenzo Sonego. Fourth seed Jannik Sinner was drawn in the top half as a potential semi-final opponent for Djokovic while Carlos Alcaraz and third seed Daniil Medvedev are in the bottom half.

In the women’s draw, Emma Raducanu will make her grand slam return against American Shelby Rogers. Rogers was one of the players Raducanu, who is playing her first major tournament for a year following surgery on both wrists and one ankle, beat on her way to the US Open title in 2021. Raducanu made a positive return in Auckland last week, pushing Elina Svitolina in the second round before tiring, but alarm bells began ringing when she pulled out of first an exhibition match at Melbourne Park on Tuesday and then another exhibition at the Kooyong Classic on Thursday.

However, Raducanu’s team insisted both were precautionary after she felt some soreness following a practice session on Monday and she practised for two hours at Melbourne Park on Thursday. Raducanu looked relaxed and happy hitting with fellow British player Lily Miyazaki under the guidance of coach Nick Cavaday, with no strapping or obvious signs of discomfort. Rogers is a kind draw on paper with the 31-year-old also coming off a long break having not played since Wimbledon and ranked down at 156.

All the British women avoided seeds in the first round, with Katie Boulter drawing China’s Yuan Yue and Jodie Burrage taking on German Tamara Korpatsch. An intriguing women’s draw was headlined by top seed Iga Swiatek taking on 2020 champion Sofia Kenin, with the winner to play either another past winner in the returning Angelique Kerber or former finalist Danielle Collins. Four-time grand slam champion Swiatek is the only one of that quartet who is yet to reach the final in Melbourne, although she will be a strong favourite to come through.

Naomi Osaka, who like Kerber is returning after having a baby, makes her grand slam comeback against 16th seed Caroline Garcia while reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka faces a qualifier. Caroline Wozniacki’s first match in Melbourne since her retirement here in 2020 will be against 20th seed Magda Linette, with the Dane having returned to the sport last summer, reaching the fourth round of the US Open.

Meanwhile, Oliver Crawford was the only one of five British hopes to reach the final round of qualifying in his first tournament playing under his new flag. Crawford, whose parents are from Birmingham, changed nationality from American to British earlier this month. And the 24-year-old, who is ranked 213th, is now one win away from playing in the main draw of a grand slam for the first time after battling to a 6-4 6-7 (7) 6-4 victory over Italy’s Francesco Passaro. Crawford missed two match points in the second set but put the disappointment behind him to clinch victory in the third and will take on Czech 24th seed Vit Kopriva in the final round.

Francesca Jones looked poised to join him when she led German teenager Ella Seidel 4-0 in the deciding set but, not for the first time, the 23-year-old, who only has seven toes, was struck down by cramp and retired in tears at 6-3 6-7 (5) 4-4. Jones had battled back from 1-4 down in the second set to force a decider and had three chances to open up a 5-0 lead before, with the umpire threatening to give her a game penalty as she struggled to move behind the baseline, she was forced to call it quits and was helped off the court.

Elsewhere, there was a disappointing 6-4 6-4 loss for Harriet Dart against Ukrainian Yuliia Starodubtseva while Billy Harris lost 3-6 6-3 6-2 to eighth seed David Goffin and Ryan Peniston was beaten 6-3 6-2 by Aziz Dougaz.
