Newcastle's Anthony Gordon calls out three England stars over taking their Euro 2024 place

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon is gunning for a spot at Euro 2024 and he believes his versatility can give him the edge over his England rivals.

Gordon made his Three Lions debut last month as Gareth Southgate’s side lost 1-0 to Brazil at Wembley and he also came off the bench in their 2-2 draw against Belgium. The 23-year-old has also starred for Newcastle this season, having netted 11 goals and provided nine assists across all competitions.

And Gordon is desperate to make it to the Euros this summer, namechecking Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish when discussing his prospects. “I think versatility in a tournament is massive,” Gordon said on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet.

“The likes of Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish can play across the front line and in midfield, but I feel that I’ve done it a lot this season especially in big games, and I think that matters.

“I’ve played out of position in big games and done well, so I think that matters.‌ Playing as a centre forward or as a right-winger is out of position for me because the left is probably my main position.

“I’ve played number 10 at times, and I’ve proven in big games that no matter where I play, I can still perform, and having that trust from the manager and the players around me, which I think is the most important thing.”

According to Sky Sports, UEFA are set to allow teams to select expanded 26-man squads for the Euros and Gordon may well benefit from that change. Southgate was impressed by him during last month’s international break and stated that Gordon was a “serious contender” to make the squad.

“The good thing is that he did what we thought he was going to do,” Southgate said. “He showed what he’s done for his club. He’s a serious contender and we have to know what these other options are if we lose players like we have, because no-one really knows how this season is going to pan out.”

And Gordon says he “felt like I belonged” after linking up with the Three Lions, explaining: “I loved being a part of the England squad. I’ve always said that I just needed that in to get into the team, because getting into the squad is so hard with the great players they’ve got in there.

“I always wanted to get that opportunity to show them what I can do because I’m confident in myself that I would do well in that situation, and I felt like that was the case. When I got there, I felt like I belonged there, and this is the level I should be at.”
