Stellenbosch FC protect Kaizer Chiefs’ pride!

Kaizer Chiefs are set to host Mamelodi Sundowns in a DStv Premiership encounter at the FNB Stadium tonight.

Sundowns are just one victory away from defending their title and it could come against rivals Chiefs.

Chiefs escape guard of honour

This game could have become a very tricky one for Chiefs. If Stellenbosch FC failed to win against Golden Arrows, Sundowns would’ve been crowned champions. That could’ve meant that Amakhosi would’ve had to do a guard of honour for the Brazilians. That, however, was not going to be a problem, according to defender Given Msimango.

“We are professionals. I think while the team [Kaizer Chiefs] was at its highest point and winning things, a lot of teams honoured them with a guard of honour as a sign of respect. Winning the league is one of the highest achievements in South African football. Of course, if it does happen … and they are champions before we play them, I think the team will respect them enough to give them what is due to them and still make the game a very competitive one.” Said Msimango as per Sunday World.

Chiefs have escaped that but will have another pressure and that is to ensure Sundowns don’t be crowned champions at their expense. They will be looking to keep the momentum from beating the Brazilians’ neighbours SuperSport United.

Sundowns will still aim to win the league

Chiefs will be coming up against a Sundowns team that has already played this week. They were able to dispatch TS Galaxy 3-0 at Loftus Versfeld on Monday evening. They remain unbeaten this season and have not lost a league fixture under Rulani Mokwena’s tenure.

Sundowns will still have to play a third game this week. Masandawana still have a crunch Nedbank Cup semifinal away to Stellenbosch on Sunday. With that in mind, it remains to be seen what type of team Mokwena will be fielding against Chiefs.
