Stats from Iga Swiatek’s incredible 2022 season – featuring bagels and breadsticks from the Iga Bakery

stats from iga swiatek’s incredible 2022 season – featuring bagels and breadsticks from the iga bakery

Iga Swiatek with the French Open trophy the morning after

Iga Swiatek was the standout player on the WTA Tour in 2022 and it is no surprise that there have been some pretty remarkable statistics from her dominant campaign. For instance, did you know she handed out 22 bagels this year?

The Pole started the season just inside the top 10 in the WTA Rankings, but she rose to the top following Ashleigh Barty’s retirement and if anyone thought she was not cutout for the No 1 spot then she will no doubt have changed their minds with a series of stunning results.

“I think this is going to be the season that I’m going to be thinking of for the rest of my life. On the other hand I would love to have season like that in the future,” Swiatek said.

“I guess the best way to do that is to not focus on what happened but focusing on what’s next. I still know I have many things to improve so I’m looking forward to it.”

A selection of statistics from a brilliant 2022 campaign from Swiatek

A first world No 1 from Poland

  • The Pole became the 28th WTA world No 1 when she replaced Ashleigh Barty at the top of the WTA Rankings and she has looked untouchable since ascending the throne on April 4.
  • Swiatek became the first tennis player – man or woman – from Poland to be ranked No 1 in the singles.
  • She has been top of the rankings for 34 weeks already, which means she has already surpassed the likes of Naomi Osaka (25), Tracy Austin (21), Maria Sharapova (21), Kim Clijsters (20), Jennifer Capriati (17), Arantxa Sánchez Vicario (12) and Venus Williams (11) for most week sat the top.

Swiatek’s winning streak in 2022

  • Swiatek won 37 consecutive matches from February 22 until July 2 for the longest-winning streak on the WTA Tour this century. Her incredible run bettered that of Venus Williams (35) and Serena Williams (34). Her run started at the Qatar Open and was ended in the third round at Wimbledon.
  • The Pole’s streak, which lasted for 135 days, is tied with Martina Hingis as the joint-longest streak since 1997.

Nine finals, eight titles, two Grand Slams

  • The world No 1’s 37 match-winning streak included winning six consecutive titles as she lifted trophies at the Qatar Open, Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, Italian Open and Roland-Garros from February to June.
  • Her unbeaten run was ended by Alize Cornet in the third round at Wimbledon, but she went on to reach another three finals – winning the US Open and Southern California Open.

The Iga Swiatek Bakery

  • Swiatek handed out 22 bagels and 20 breadsticks this year. In case you are not sure what that means, she won 22 sets 6-0 and 20 sets 6-1. Her bagel record is the best on the WTA Tour since Serena Williams achieved 25 in 2013.
  • Swiatek herself lost only four sets 6-1 and she was never on the receiving end of a bagel. Ironically, her final set of the season was a 1-6 breadstick at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka at the WTA Finals.

Other bits and pieces

  • Swiatek played 76 matches this year and she lost only nine with Ashleigh Barty, Danielle Collins, Jelena Ostapenko, Alize Cornet, Caroline Garcia, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Madison Keys, Barbora Krejcikova and Aryna Sabalenka the only players to beat her.
  • The Pole played in nine finals and won eight titles to take her lifetime finals record to 11-2.
  • Swiatek was 18-1 on clay this year as she won titles in Stuttgart, Rome and the French Open with Garcia’s win at the Poland Open her only defeat on the surface. In fact, she lost only four sets in 19 matches on clay.
  • The 21-year-old finished the season with 11,085 ranking points – the most since Serena Williams earned 13,615 in 2013.
  • Swiatek made $9,875,525 in prize-money earnings this year – her best season to date – and her overall earnings now stands at $14,735,077, which puts her 34th on the all-time list.
  • Her $9,875,525 is also the fifth best in terms of best-season with Serena Williams’ $12,385,572 (2013), Ashleigh Barty’s $11,307,587 (2019), Williams’ $10,582,642 (2015) and Angelique Kerber’s $10,136,615 (2016) better.
