SAITAMA, JAPAN – AUGUST 07: Keldon Johnson #4 of Team United States poses for photographs with his gold medal during the Men’s Basketball medal ceremony on day fifteen of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Saitama Super Arena on August 07, 2021 in Saitama, Japan. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Stadium, a multi-platform sports network, shared a video this week of San Antonio Spurs star Keldon Johnson sitting down with NBA insider Shams Charania to chat about his gold medal and his full-time job under coach Gregg Popovich. During the seven-minute interview, Johnson revealed his reaction to being recruited for Team USA and shares his true feelings about Coach Pop.

“It was kind of like a dream come true, it didn’t feel real at first because everything I needed to go right went right,” said Johnson  of the moment he was asked to join the 2021 Olympic team.

“It was like walking on cloud nine.”

Johnson also praised those legendary Spurs who remain close to the team.

“Any questions I have Manu is right there,” Johnson added. “He’s almost there at every practice and Tim still comes by.”

“Having that resource there, anytime I have a question or anytime I might not understand what Pop is saying and don’t want to ask Pop,” said Johnson. “Just having that resource there is huge.”

While being coached by one of the league’s greatest can be intimidating, Johnson said he still maintains a close relationship to Popovich and explains that the coach always makes himself available to talk about anything and everything.

“He’s very down to earth and one of the best people I’ve ever met,” said Johnson. “Taking everything from Pop is big. He’s a legendary coach and one of the best, if not the best to ever do it.”

Whether or not Johnson will remain an Alamo City fixture is still unknown, however, he shared his love for the city and playing for the Spurs.

“Being a part of the Spurs organization is an hono. they have a winning culture, its legendary,” he added. “I feel like right now we’re trying to continue that culture and keep winning.”
