Souness says £68m United man would be ‘fantastic’ at Liverpool or City

Graeme Souness has given his two pence on Manchester United again.

Now, it’s club captain Bruno Fernandes who has been cast into the spotlight for his attitude, which is something that he’s come under fire for numerous times since making a £68 million package move from Sporting Lisbon in 2020.

Even Roy Keane went in on Fernandes after United’s 3-0 Manchester derby defeat in October, claiming that he’d take the armband off of him and that the midfielder is the ‘opposite’ of what he’d want in a skipper.

Still, it must not be underestimated the impact Fernandes has had at Old Trafford; while his goal contributions may have dried up slightly in the past couple of seasons, he was named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for two successive campaigns. In 2020/2021, he notched a remarkable 28 goals and 17 assists in 58 appearances.

Souness gives his verdict

Speaking on talkSPORT, Souness weighed in on the Portugal star’s notorious behaviour antics on the pitch.

“He is a player. I don’t think he’s a captain. In terms of quality, if he played for Liverpool or if he played for City he would be a fantastic player. We would not be having this conversation,” the Scot explained.

“All this, shaking the head is majorly disappointing. He wouldn’t be losing as many games [at Liverpool or City] and he wouldn’t be so frustrated. But I accept his body language isn’t great at times and I was majorly disappointed of him in the 7-0 defeat at Anfield last year when he just stopped running back.”
