Am Sonntagabend sprach Srdjan Djokovic, der Vater des Tennisstars, im serbischen TV.

Er verriet, dass sein Sohn wohl nicht am Australian Open teilnimmt.

Der Hintergrund: Nur gegen Corona geimpfte Tennisprofis dürfen beim ersten Grand-Slam-Turnier des Jahres vom 17. bis 30. Januar in Australien mitspielen.

Ob Djokovic geimpft ist oder nicht, ist unklar. Der Serbe verrät es nicht.

Novak Djokovic wird beim Australian Open voraussichtlich nicht an den Start gehen. Der Grund: Die Impfpflicht gegen das Coronavirus. Dieser Meinung ist zumindest der Vater des Tennisstars.

Die Teilnahme des serbischen Weltranglisten-Ersten Novak Djokovic am Australian Open bleibt wegen der Impfskepsis des Tennisstars weiterhin fraglich. «Unter diesen Erpressungen und Umständen ist es wahrscheinlich, dass er nicht teilnehmen wird», sagte sein Vater Srdjan Djokovic am Sonntag im serbischen Fernsehsender Prva TV.

Der Hintergrund: Nur gegen Corona geimpfte Tennisprofis dürfen beim ersten Grand-Slam-Turnier des Jahres vom 17. bis 30. Januar in Australien mitspielen. Der Titelverteidiger liess bislang seinen Impfstatus und Start in Melbourne offen. Der 34-Jährige hatte in der Vergangenheit mehrfach erklärt, dass sein Impfstatus Privatsache sei.

«Er hat das Recht zu entscheiden, wie er will»

Ähnlich äusserte sich der ältere Djokovoc in dem Fernsehgespräch. «Jeder hat das Recht, über seine eigene Gesundheit zu entscheiden. Geimpft zu sein oder nicht, ist jedermanns ureigenste Entscheidung», meinte er. Er glaube nicht, dass der Sohn seinen Impfstatus offenlegen werde. Er wisse aber auch nicht, wie sich sein Sohn entscheidet. Selbst wenn er es wüsste, würde er nicht im Fernsehen darüber sprechen. «Er hat das Recht zu entscheiden, wie er will», so Srdjan Djokovic.

Würde der Serbe in Melbourne antreten, könnte er mit seinem 21. Grand-Slam-Titel am Schweizer Roger Federer und dem Spanier Rafael Nadal vorbeiziehen. Turnierdirektor Craig Tiley hatte jedoch Ende des Vormonats direkt zum neunmaligen Australian-Open-Champion Stellung genommen. «Wir würden Novak liebend gern hier sehen, aber er weiss, dass er geimpft sein muss, um zu spielen», sagte Tiley.
