Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse has swung into the box office with a bang.
The animated superhero film — a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — had the best opening of the summer, earning an estimated $120M over the weekend, according to Deadline.
That makes it the biggest opening of the summer movie season so far, surpassing the $118.4 million debut of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
It also makes it the second-biggest opening of the year, right behind the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The film is the third-best opening for any movie in the Spider-Man franchise, after No Way Home (2021) and Spider-Man 3 (2007).

In comparison, No Way Home earned $260.1M while Spider-Man 3 brought in $151.1M.
In terms of all animated domestic openings, Spider-Verse is in the sixth spot, behind Incredibles 2 ($182.6M), Super Mario Bros ($146.3M), Finding Dory ($135M), Frozen 2 ($130.2M) and Toy Story 4 ($120.9M).
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is also the longest Western animated film, with a running time of 2 hours and 20 minutes.
The latest chapter in the Spider-Man story follows Brooklyn teenager-turned-superhero Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he finds himself back in the Multiverse after reuniting with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld).
It is here that he ‘encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence.
‘When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles must redefine what it means to be a hero,’ reads the official synopsis.
Meanwhile The Little Mermaid currently sits at number two on the domestic chart, with a total of $120.5M in its second weekend.
The Disney live-action film of the animated classic stars Halle Bailey, 23, as Ariel, the youngest of daughter of King Triton, played by Javier Bardem, 54, who rules the seas.

The film, directed by Rob Savage (Dashcam) and written by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), was originally developed for release on the Hulu streaming service.

The films sees Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and Vin Diesel all reunited.
Despite the film’s low reviews by critics, it has won high praise from fans, who have given it an audience score of 97 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fast X sits in the fifth spot in its third week, with a total of $128.4M.
It is the tenth film in the Fast and Furious franchise starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster.

SUGA-Agust D Tour ‘D-Day’ in Japan: Live VI takes the ninth spot with $1.24M in its first week, while You Hurt My Feelings is in the 10th spot and brought in $3M in its second week.
