A South Carolina gun store owner fatally shot a worker in the face during a questionable prank that turned deadly.
Jon Whitley, 59, told authorities he mistook a real Glock 17 handgun for a BB gun when he blasted employee Stefan Mrgan inside Coastal Firearms in the Wando area last month.
The shop owner had placed a BB gun alongside real weapons in the store, intending to play a joke on Mrgan — but Whitley ended up picking up a real gun and shot Mrgn at close range, a police affidavit said.
Whitley was arrested this week and slapped with an involuntary manslaughter charge for the Nov. 2 incident.
Whitley is a former volunteer reserve deputy with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and a retired National Guard major, the Post and Courier reported.
The victim, who was 36, had served in the military and spent time in the Army Special Forces, according to the Post and Courier. He had three children, the newspaper said.

“It’s just inconceivable what this is going to do to our kids,” his widow Alison, the mother of two of Mrgn’s children, told the publication. “Our 4-year-old and 4-month old are not even old enough to understand. And he was really an amazing dad. And they’re going to miss out on that now.”
